I
have been involved in acoustic ecology for the past 20 years.
We know that some particular sounds - natural sounds as well as human sounds - which are present in a certain place determine in certain ways the boundaries of the community living in that place. It is not the sound itself that "creates" the community, though; it is the experience people share about that sound. Through the web - we also know - we have now the possibility to constitute new and different communities, but I think that this will be really possible if we begin to share not only materials and instruments, but also memories and experience. My projects generally move in this direction: to gve a meaning to terms like "web experience." THEBIGEAR - an Imaginary Soundscape A literary and musical operation. Let's build an imaginary soundscape, imagining to have such a powerful ear that it can perceive sounds coming from an endless acoustic horizon. Participating to the project is very simple: by using the appropriate form (click on "to participate"), describe the sounds you are hearing in this moment in the place you are - sounds coming from the room where you are with your computer, or from your home, or from outside, from the city or the countryside. >>> THEBIGEAR |
Francesco
Michi lives and works in Firenze, Italy, where he also took
a degree in Philosophy and then in Electronic Music. In 1982, he founded
FORMAT - architetture sonore - a group of musicians/composers
working in the field of electroacoustic and computer music. Though
having different musical backgrounds the members of FORMAT shared
a common research and activity regarding the relationship between
sound and environment. FORMAT's line of research and operation was
twofold. The first one consists in experimenting new creative approaches
with the materials which technology, especially the "plain and
simple" one, offers to daily use; the second one consists in
studying the acoustic environment and its modifications, and in operating
on them.
Francesco
Michi and FORMAT published several theoretical essays
and realized sound installations, performances, sound sculptures,
sound and musical machines, radio programmes etc., in Italy and
abroad. All these works are based on the concepts of acoustic ecology
and acoustic design. Since
1999 he is involved also (as a teorician and as an artist) in musical
webbased project. The last netart project is named THEBIGEAR
project and it is "in progress" until the end of 2003. |
