(O)pen S(ource) LOOM by Margarita Benitez
OSLOOM by Margarita Benitez (lead instigator), et al:
The OSLOOM (pronounced O S Loom) project is about creating an open source hand loom that is computer controlled by basic software where anyone can simply weave a photo via a web browser (twill/satin). It would also be able to import weave ready files from other software (such as Bhakti/Alice photoshop method). The loom can either be built by you or will be available as a kit. Both the software and the hardware are open source and plans will be ultimately obtained through the website.
Margarita Benitez is an art + technology and fiber artist based in Chicago + Miami. She is interested in the explorations of art within the making and DIY culture. Her work is rooted in exploring underlying social issues in technology – exploring how today’s society copes with the overwhelming presence of technology, surveillance, data mining and media bombardment.
OSLOOM has been a dream of Margarita’s for a few years now. Attempting to get funding and the perfect team of individuals has taken a while, but finally it seems that everything is falling into place. Margarita’s interest in weaving occurred somewhat backwards to a traditional weaving experience. She had never woven prior to attending a boot camp workshop at The Jacquard Center with Bethanne Knudson. Her first weaving experience was with industrial Jacquard looms. She proceeded to learn more about weaving as she progressed to the TC-1 loom, a computerized floor loom, during her graduate studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Eventually, she finally made her way to weaving on floor and table looms but there was no comparison to the computer controlled looms. No one wants to see this project succeed more than her. Bringing a low cost DIY open source computerized floor loom such as OSLOOM into fruition can change what the studio weaver can accomplish and bring their studio practice into the digital world.
Margarita is seeking community support. The kickstarter funding site can be found here. Also find OSLOOM on Facebook and Twitter.
