-1520 SEDGWICK AVENUE

1520 Sedgwick is rightly known as the birthplace of hip hop. In its recreation room on the first floor, Kool Herc and his sister threw dance parties using two turntables playing the same record, and focusing and isolating "the break" - the percussive part that dancers focused on. He also introduced the DJ style of inserting slang phrases into the beat to fire up the b-boys and b-girls.

Clive Campbell known as Kool Herc or DJ Kool Herc, was called Hercules on the basketball courts, due to his height and stature. Once he joined the Ex-Vandals graffiti crew he took on the nickname Kool Herc.
