This description refers to kanarinka’s first Studio piece, “Color Stories: Yellow.”

kanarinka is intimately concerned with collage, juxtaposition, and sampling; and the WAYS we can sample, or RULES we can make up about sampling raw data that will yield a dynamic and aesthetically coherent work of art. She’s interested in code one can write and the interactive dynamics one can conceive to build up layer upon layer of “art modules” (individual artworks in themselves) that can yield a larger, more complex, emergent work of art.

Kanarinka is the only net artist I can think of who does color studies. Her work on yellow, ‘Color Stories – Yellow’ integrates samples featuring the color to build ‘art modules.’ Some of these have an informal quality, but still, perhaps because of the affective capabilities of the color, they seem to move beyond the screen. In other modules, the dominance of color gives way to a focus on narrative, or to an investigation of animating color. Some ‘Stories’ seem in line with Abstract Expressionist concerns with ‘beauty;’ others evoke color field studies. There is a lot here – Kanarinka’s work covers some dense (yellow) territory.

I am intimately concerned with collage, juxtaposition, and sampling, particularly as those can relate to an interactive, visual environment. Specifically, I am interested in WAYS we can sample or RULES we can make up about sampling raw data that will yield a dynamic and aesthetically coherent work of art. I am interested in code one can write and the interactive dynamics one can conceive to build up layer upon layer of “art modules” (individual artworks in themselves) that can yield a larger, more complex, emergent work of art.

I explore these themes both in a digital net.art/software art environment and in the physical world through collage, installation and performance. I am fascinated by how art-making and code-making in the digital realm can influence and guide art-making in the physical realm and vice versa.

I am currently exploring these ideas in my series “Color Stories” in which I’m currently focused on the color yellow. I would like to think that I am taking a holistic, medium-democratic approach to my explorations in Yellow. I began by creating purely yellow collages and gluing yellow materials in the frames of comic books. I then started taking digital photos of yellow objects and manipulating them by systematically turning almost everything non-yellow into a shade of yellow. From this process emerged a database of photos which I then began to write code on top of for each Yellow “issue”.

The code that I write creates an interactive, visual collage for each issue. Some are purely abstract, some are experiments in form, and the latest piece actually explores narrative to some extent. I am hoping to find a balance between code and aesthetics, abstraction and narrative. – kanarinka
