Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to announce a major solo exhibition by Florian Hecker, his first in a UK public institution, comprising a new installation of sound pieces co-commissioned by Chisenhale Gallery, London and IKON Gallery, Birmingham. Hecker’s new commission continues his investigation of sound in relation to the body and space, employing idiosyncratic psychoacoustic propositions in order to examine and disrupt spatial perception.

At Chisenhale Gallery Hecker will present a series of four independent, electro-acoustic works that lead the visitor around the gallery space, where each work exposes a fault line in the traditional categorizations of auditory events, auditory objects or streams. Continue reading

From 17 January through to 14 February 2010 the Foundation for Visual Arts Middelburg (Stichting Beeldende Kunst Middelburg) will present American artist Mark Bain’s exhibition orbitor at De Vleeshal, on the Markt. The exhibition’s opening, on 16 January at 5 p.m., will be marked by an audio performance by Mark Bain.

In orbitor, Mark Bain uses the De Vleeshal itself, once Middelburg’s town hall, as an instrument. As do all buildings, De Vleeshal produces sound: the resonant history of different materials in time and space. Here electricity, radio waves and other social systems continually circulate; hidden movements of which we are not always aware. Continue reading

The thirteenth Sonic Acts Festival in Amsterdam is entirely dedicated to the exploration of space in performative and audiovisual art, film, music and architecture. Sonic Acts XIII - The Poetics of Space examines the importance of physical space in times of far-reaching technological developments, and the physical and psychological impact of spatial designs.

Researching spatiality in the arts forms the core of the festival. How is space defined by a work of art? What does a viewer or listener experience? How do technological artworks deal with the visual, auditory and psychological aspects of spatiality? Continue reading

The Blackest Flux is an experiment toward abstraction of space/body. By using acoustic and psychoacoustic phenomena, it creates a state of disorientation and a series of tactile movement of sound masses over space.

Yutaka Makino is an artist and researcher currently based in Los Angeles. He seeks to amalgamate the historic precedents of computational composition and science, involving research in non-standard sound synthesis, spatial perception, acoustics, collective behavior, complex dynamical systems and emergence. shut up and listen! enters its fourth season in 2009. This edition’s title ‘Land der Berge’ (german for ‘land of the mountains’, referring to Austria’s national anthem of the same name) points at the ‘typical Austrian’ in all his ambivalence, as well as highlighting artistic positions related to alpine experiences. In concerts, sound projections and listening spaces, the festival presents electroacoustic works and sound art projects, as well as music for dulcimer, (counter) guitar or self-invented instruments. Additional works were retrieved through an open call in cooperation with Austrian music institutions. Finally, a lecture sheds light on the history of the Austrian national anthem. Continue reading

Peter Traub premieres his new installation, Solera: for sound, site, and time :: October 26 – November 6, 2009 :: Ruffin Hall, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. :: Talk: November 2, 2009; 2:00 p.m.

Composer and installation artist Peter Traub will premiere his new public sound work in the Ruffin Hall main lobby at the University of Virginia. Solera is an ongoing installation that will run for 24 hours a day, accumulating and playing back the sonic activities and characteristics of the installation space – people passing through, conversations, machines, and music. Over the two weeks of the installation, the incidental sounds of each day and the acoustic resonances of the space will be layered upon each other, creating an aural memory of the space that will grow and change over time. Jelly are casual, co-working events happening in cities across the world. Turn up, log-in, create, collaborate or work solo. It’s open source living - sharing bandwidth, ideas and elbow room. Thursdays at SPACE are Jelly days. They provide the space, the wifi, the desks and (if you’re lucky) the doughnuts. You bring your laptop. Hours are 10am to 6pm, it’s free and registration is required. There will be an informal opportunity to introduce projects with tea (‘IT at high tea’) and everyone - from designers, developers, writers, artists – is welcome.

A self-taught artist based in Berlin since 1999, Philipp Geist (VIDEOGEIST) works internationally through the media of video, performance, photography, and painting. In 2008, he projected his video installation Time Fades across the Piazzetta open space of the Kulturforum in Berlin.
