The Edith Russ Site for Media Art awards work stipends has awarded a 2009 stipend to The Sine Wave Orchestra (Ken Furudate, Kazuhiro Jo, Daisuke Ishida, Mizuki Noguchi)

The fundamentals of our networked, global and technological culture and our resulting means of interaction are connected by the sine wave. We dance to them on our mp3 players, watch TV because of them and surf their peaks and troughs while making long distance phone calls. Sine waves form an ethereal and omnipresent framework, which become the tactile material the SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA (SWO) sculpts and manipulates through unique participatory sound events. This week marked the passing of a true visionary of contemporary art, Max Neuhaus. Originally an accomplished solo percussionist who toured with Boulez and Stockhausen, in the late 1960’s Neuhaus moved his practice out of the concert hall and into the public sphere, setting up numerous sound-based installations in and around New York City.

One of his most famous installations is Times Square, a work consisting of a large speaker emitting a resonating drone from beneath a traffic island grate in the heart of the crossroads. The work is remarkable for its ability to carve out a meditative sonic chamber amid the clamor and saturation of its surroundings. Continue reading

Johannes Kreidler fed Microsoft Songsmith with charts based on plummeting stocks, war casualties and other doomsday statistics. The results are a lot more upbeat than you would expect.

We are pleased to announce the winners of our international juried competition, Networked: a (networked_book) about (networked_art). They are, ANNE HELMOND, PATRICK LICHTY, ANNA MUNSTER, MARISA OLSON, and KAZYS VARNELIS.

Each will receive a commission of $3,000 to develop a chapter that will be open for revision, commentary, and translation. Networked will launch on July 1, 2009.

At this point our only hope is that those of you who have not yet contributed to our Campaign for Sustainability will decide to do so.

The project starts out with an introduction. The first interview is with Helen Thorington and Jo-Anne Green of Turbulence.org. Next will be Marc Garrett of Furtherfield, followed by Simona Lodi of Torino Share Festival.

According to Pallab Ghosh, Science correspondent, BBC News, scientists have recorded the sound of three stars similar to our Sun using France’s Corot space telescope. The sounds have enabled them to get information about processes deep within stars for the first time.

The subtly pulsating, haunting sounds are very similar to artist Aphex Twin’s minimalistic nineties album ‘Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2,’ only stripping away what little melody it had and leaving just the beat.
