Sine Wave Orchestra wins Edith Russ Stipend

The Edith Russ Site for Media Art awards work stipends has awarded a 2009 stipend to The Sine Wave Orchestra (Ken Furudate, Kazuhiro Jo, Daisuke Ishida, Mizuki Noguchi)

The fundamentals of our networked, global and technological culture and our resulting means of interaction are connected by the sine wave. We dance to them on our mp3 players, watch TV because of them and surf their peaks and troughs while making long distance phone calls. Sine waves form an ethereal and omnipresent framework, which become the tactile material the SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA (SWO) sculpts and manipulates through unique participatory sound events. Europeans Act Now - Preserve a Free and Open Internet

300px-internet_map_1024.jpgURGENT– The European open internet is in danger. The EU PARLIAMENT is voting on new rules on the 5th of MAY 2009 that will let broadband providers limit your access. Don’t let the them lock up the Internet! There will be no way back! [image from Visual Dictionary online]

Internet access is not conditional. Everyone who owns a website has an interest in defending the free use of the Internet… so has everyone who uses Google or Skype… everyone who expresses their opinions freely, does research of any kind, whether for personal health problems or academic study … everyone who shops online…who dates online…socialises online… listens to music…watches video… Continue reading

UK Home Office restricts non-EU artists and academics

Dear friends and colleagues,

I’m writing to draw your attention to a petition that has been formed against the new Home Office restructions to non-EU artists and academics. In January Russian artist Dmitry Vilensky was twice refused a Visa to enter the UK because he was to earn a small fee for a seminar that was co-organised by The Showroom and Afterall. Since then we have become more aware of the recent changes in restrictions that make it difficult and expensive for arts organsations to bring artists and academics from outside of the EU.

The civil liberties group, The Manifesto Club along with Manick Govinda of Arts Admin, The Showroom, Afterall and other arts groups are working hard to get the message across that these parochial and suspicious regulations need to be reconsidered, and re-affirm the vital contribution made by global artists and scholars to UK cultural and intellectual life. Goodbye Max Neuhaus (1939-2009)

max-neuhausthumbnail.jpgThis week marked the passing of a true visionary of contemporary art, Max Neuhaus. Originally an accomplished solo percussionist who toured with Boulez and Stockhausen, in the late 1960’s Neuhaus moved his practice out of the concert hall and into the public sphere, setting up numerous sound-based installations in and around New York City.

One of his most famous installations is Times Square, a work consisting of a large speaker emitting a resonating drone from beneath a traffic island grate in the heart of the crossroads. The work is remarkable for its ability to carve out a meditative sonic chamber amid the clamor and saturation of its surroundings. Continue reading

World Crises Charts fed into Microsoft's Songsmith

Johannes Kreidler fed Microsoft Songsmith with charts based on plummeting stocks, war casualties and other doomsday statistics. The results are a lot more upbeat than you would expect.

Uncertainty About Our Survival

To those of you who have already contributed to our fundraising campaign, thank you. We are deeply grateful.

As we look at 2009, there is real uncertainty about our organization’s survival. Faced with rapidly declining funds, we must either require a membership fee — thereby blocking public access to our sites; or we must take them all offline: Turbulence.org, Networked_Performance, Networked_Music_Review, and New American Radio.

We do not wish to do either.

At this point our only hope is that those of you who have not yet contributed to our Campaign for Sustainability will decide to do so.

Networked_Performance alone is accessed by 32,000 unique visitors per month; many of you return three or more times. If each of you were to give $5.00, we could continue to make our sites freely available.

Please act now. Pay via PayPal on the Turbulence homepagehere or mail a check to:

Thanks.

Interviewing the crisis

[Image: 29, the symphony, by Luca Bertini] Interviewing the crisis is a series of articles hosted on artsblog.it in which Salvatore Iaconesi and penelope.di.pixel analyze some of the issues of the rising financial crisis through a sequence of reports and interviews.

The project starts out with an introduction. The first interview is with Helen Thorington and Jo-Anne Green of Turbulence.org. Next will be Marc Garrett of Furtherfield, followed by Simona Lodi of Torino Share Festival.

The focus is on the crisis’ impact on art and, specifically, on new media art disciplines, organizations, artists. Continue reading

One Day Left ...

Dear Friends,

Mark Amerika says: “Turbulence is a permanent part of the digital art and electronic literature curriculum I have developed at the University of Colorado and a major component of our special topics courses too. The students who pass through our media arts program are amazed at everything Turbulence has achieved over the years. A common response is something like “I had no idea artists made work like this.” And then, with a little more direction, they too begin making networked art projects. To us, Turbulence is one of the most important cultural institutions on the planet! (Helen) and Jo have single (double)-handedly played a huge role in making it possible for higher arts educators like myself to successfully teach the networked arts.”

We know for a fact that many of you use our resources to teach digital art and new media. And many others have written to tell us how great an impact we’ve had on their careers. Please, show us how much we matter by making a donation right now. Continue reading

The Sound of Three Stars

_45137506_star_science_226.jpg According to Pallab Ghosh, Science correspondent, BBC News, scientists have recorded the sound of three stars similar to our Sun using France’s Corot space telescope. The sounds have enabled them to get information about processes deep within stars for the first time.

The subtly pulsating, haunting sounds are very similar to artist Aphex Twin’s minimalistic nineties album ‘Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2,’ only stripping away what little melody it had and leaving just the beat.

You can listen to the sounds here. Continue reading
