Live Stage: Rafael Toral [us Troy, NY]

toral.jpgRafael Toral: The Space Program :: May 8, 2009; 8:00 pm :: EMPAC, 110 8th Street, Troy, NY.

From Lisbon, musician Rafael Toral presents a collection of his Space Studies, a series of works exploring different combinations of gestural control and sonic palette. Each study is an interdependent spatial and aural exploration that together create an instrument of Toral’s own design. These instruments require visible performance techniques that in many cases are more akin to dance than to what we think of as part of a laptop or electronic music performance (clicking, knobbing, mousing, buttoning). Live Stage: A House in Bali [id Ubud, Bali]

bali.jpgA House in Bali is a new dance-opera by composer Evan Ziporyn, with a libretto by Real Time Opera’s Paul Schick.

Featuring an all-star international cast of vocalists, dancers, and musicians, it traces the roots of the west’s century-long infatuation with Bali, through the true story of three westerners - composer Colin McPhee, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and artist Walter Spies - during their 1930s sojourn in Bali. This stunning, multi-media spectacle brings together the finest ensembles of east and west: a 15-piece Balinese gamelan directed by the dynamic Dewa Ketut Alit, the Bang on a Can All-Stars with guest violinist Todd Reynolds, Balinese choreography by the enchanting Kadek Dewi Aryani, wayang shadow puppets, and high-tech projections converge, pushing all boundaries of theatrical innovation. In Flock, music notation, electronic sound, and video animation are all generated in real time based on the locations of musicians, dancers, and audience members as they move and interact with each other. Computer vision software analyzes video from an overhead camera to determine the location of each participant, and this data is used to create music notation for four jazz saxophonists, to render a video animation, and to generate an electronic soundtrack. By inviting the audience to help create the unique music and visuals for each performance, Flock seeks to reconcile concert performance with the dynamics of collaborative creation, multi-player games, and social networks to create an engaging live event.
