PIXILERATIONS [v.7] is a new media showcase in Providence, Rhode Island that investigates the state of new media arts through installations, concert performances and film/video screenings. It is part of the larger FirstWorks Festival, a multidimensional performing arts festival held in Providence each fall. Pixilerations is produced by FirstWorks in collaboration with the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, and the City of Providence’s Department of Art, Culture + Tourism. Send and Receive Audio Art Festival

send + receive is an annual audio art festival showcasing current and newly emerging areas of sonic investigation in a variety of forms through live performance, radio broadcasts, web-based projects, internet streaming projects, installations, film and video screenings, workshops, talks and panel discussions. send + receive is an international festival that advances the discipline of sound art, and is one of the few annual media arts festivals in North America focusing exclusively on sound-based work.

As the festival is programed well in advance of each edition, most submissions received by the March 5, 2010 deadline will be considered for future editions and off season programming in 2011 and beyond.

orbitor by Mark Bain renders architecture audible [nl Middelburg]

From 17 January through to 14 February 2010 the Foundation for Visual Arts Middelburg (Stichting Beeldende Kunst Middelburg) will present American artist Mark Bain’s exhibition orbitor at De Vleeshal, on the Markt. The exhibition’s opening, on 16 January at 5 p.m., will be marked by an audio performance by Mark Bain.

In orbitor, Mark Bain uses the De Vleeshal itself, once Middelburg’s town hall, as an instrument. As do all buildings, De Vleeshal produces sound: the resonant history of different materials in time and space. Here electricity, radio waves and other social systems continually circulate; hidden movements of which we are not always aware. Continue reading

Peter Traub Premieres Solera [us Charlottesville, VA]

peter.jpgPeter Traub premieres his new installation, Solera: for sound, site, and time :: October 26 – November 6, 2009 :: Ruffin Hall, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. :: Talk: November 2, 2009; 2:00 p.m.

Composer and installation artist Peter Traub will premiere his new public sound work in the Ruffin Hall main lobby at the University of Virginia. Solera is an ongoing installation that will run for 24 hours a day, accumulating and playing back the sonic activities and characteristics of the installation space – people passing through, conversations, machines, and music. Over the two weeks of the installation, the incidental sounds of each day and the acoustic resonances of the space will be layered upon each other, creating an aural memory of the space that will grow and change over time. Multiple visits to the piece are suggested. Continue reading

Artist Development Weekends [uk Bracknell]

found-sound180.jpg Digital Developments, artist development weekends, will begin at the Digital Media Centre, South Hill Park, Bracknell at the end of October. The season runs from “Found Sound Stories” led by sound artist and composer, Janek Schaefer, through “Using Sensors for Performance & Installation”, “Experimental Digital Printmaking”, and ends with “Circuit Bending: Atari Punk Console” at the end of November.

24/25 October :: Found Sound Stories :: Janek Schaefer, award winning composer and sound artist, introduces a weekend of field recording, performance and the physical manipulation of found sounds using an array of recording devices, turntables and Minidisc. A laptop-free zone in which to record and imagine an active audio narrative, leading to improvised performance. Results of the weekend will be recorded and may become part of a broadcast on Resonance FM. Continue reading
