Australian Broadcasting Corporation :: Broadcast: 21/03/2011 :: More than one hundred musicians from thirty-three countries spent the past week at the Sydney Opera House for a unique multi-media event which has allowed their music to instantly go worldwide via YouTube. As Rebecca Bailie reports it was the perfect marriage of classical music and cyberspace - the participants had to audition online, the spectacle was uploaded and streamed direct onto mobile phones and those lucky enough to be inside the concert hall were tweeting direct from their seats. Sequence of Waves is the collective’s inaugural sound, visual and multi-media art exhibition. John Roach’s work will be transmitted via radio from the broadcast room throughout the Convent building and includes sound objects created by: Bob Bates, Ranjit Bhatnagar, Lars Chellberg, Craig Dongoski, Jason Glasser, John Hudak, Glendon Jones, Russell Kirk, Todd Lambrix, Cynthia Lawson, Aaron Moore, Laura Sansone & Larry Sansone, and Helen Thorington.

Formerly a convent and school, St. Cecilia’s Gallery is now a hub for rotating art exhibitions and film screenings, effectively bringing life back into the three-story building. Continue reading

Rhys Chatham with Kevin Jay and David Sims team up with Angie Eng for a multimedia concert :: October 15 and 16, 2010; 8 p.m. :: The Kitchen, 512 West 19th Street, New York, NY.

Paris-based musician and composer Rhys Chatham — the beloved first music curator of The Kitchen in the 1970s — has reached legendary status in experimental music circles, best-known most recently for high profile productions of his rugged noise symphonies written for hundreds of guitars. Media artist Angie Eng and Chatham team up for this live multi-media concert, with drummer Kevin Shea and electric bassist David Sims joining on stage. Playing both guitar and trumpet, Chatham deploys extended playing techniques inherited from the glory days of free jazz (Don Cherry, Bill Dixon, Jac Berrocal…) as well as leaders of the minimalist movement (Tony Conrad, Jon Hassell, La Monte Young…) of which he is one of the successors, arriving at a mix that ebulliently exits from his various horns and axes while simultaneously going through stomp boxes and electronic devices. In this sonically and visually layered multi-media performance work, Pamela Z explores baggage in all its literal and metaphorical permutations. Through performance with voice, electronics, interactive video, and sculptural objects, Baggage Allowance scans and inventories the belongings (and memories) we all cart around examining baggage as both impediment and treasure. Drawing from Ms. Z’s extensive traveling and cartage experiences, text from found sources, and interviews with travelers who speak poetically about their memories of flying, train travel, and their numerous baggage-related stories, the work will features episodes that touch upon the ball-and-chain-ness of dragging one’s things all over the world.

Luhring Augustine presents an exhibition of new work by the collaborative team Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. This marks Cardiff and Miller’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller are internationally recognized for their immersive multimedia works. Incorporating dramatic audio tracks into their visually striking installations, the artists create engaging and transcendent multisensory experiences which draw the viewer into ambiguous and unsettling narratives. Their works address grand themes such as time, voyeurism, dreams, and mystery. Providing only fragments of information, the completion of the storylines, images and thoughts are left to be formed in the minds of the individual viewers.

BoulderPavement is an online multimedia journal. Volume 1, Issue 1 features work from and beyond The Banff Centre, centered around music and nature. It includes: an interview with composer John Luther Adams & percussionist Steven Schick; artwork by Peter von Tiesenhausen, poetry by Jennifer Still; memoir excerpt by climber and author James Perrin; an audio interview with artist Kate Hartman; and more.
