David Collins has written a short paper on different methods of notation which have evolved recently, and he thought that some readers here might be interested. The paper is available here.

The primary languages discussed are Mondrian, Abc notation, Csound, and Lilypond. The paper is not intended to be comprehensive. Collins hasn’t discussed other tools such as Philip’s Music Writer, or the various audio programming environments such as SuperCollider, Chuck and others.

The software discussed is not necessarily Linux-specific, but it is all FLOSS and available on Linux - and the information might be of interest to people who use Linux to compose music.

The transmediale Open Web Award is a new platform for radical, creative and innovative art works and projects that: are on the web and about the web; that use open source, free, libre or other non-proprietary technology (may they be soft- or hardware); and that incite participation

They can be critical, celebratory or both. Projects should have the potential to demonstrate and/or objectively critique the potential of open web issues, and those employing the creative use of HTML5 and other developing ‘open’ technologies will be given specific consideration. Introduction to Ardour FLOSS Manual is now online.

Ardour is a full-featured, free and open-source hard disk recorder and digital audio workstation program suitable for professional use. It features unlimited audio tracks and buses, non-destructive, non-linear editing with unlimited undo, and anything-to-anywhere signal routing. It supports standard file formats, such as BWF, WAV, WAV64, AIFF and CAF, and it can use LADSPA, LV2, VST and AudioUnit plugin formats.

The Introduction to Ardour FLOSS Manual is a free (gratis/libre) tutorial-style book, which introduces the program without expecting a vast knowledge of computers or sound editing from the reader. This FLOSS Manual was largely written by workshop participants learning the software themselves, over a one week period during a session led by Derek Holzer at the moddr_lab/WORM in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
