Bang on a Can violinist and composer Todd Reynolds lands classical music on its head. Controlling laptops, video and even guitar and percussion robots, he creates magic with a simple 17th-century violin. Featuring video by Luke DuBois, the films of Bill Morrison, and music machines by the League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots (LEMUR), Todd Reynolds’ Still Life with Microphone is a warm, human and passionate piece of concert theater, featuring music by him and for him by a host of New York music notables.

Live Stage: Eng and Chatham [us NYC]

eng.jpgRhys Chatham with Kevin Jay and David Sims team up with Angie Eng for a multimedia concert :: October 15 and 16, 2010; 8 p.m. :: The Kitchen, 512 West 19th Street, New York, NY.

Paris-based musician and composer Rhys Chatham — the beloved first music curator of The Kitchen in the 1970s — has reached legendary status in experimental music circles, best-known most recently for high profile productions of his rugged noise symphonies written for hundreds of guitars. Media artist Angie Eng and Chatham team up for this live multi-media concert, with drummer Kevin Shea and electric bassist David Sims joining on stage. Playing both guitar and trumpet, Chatham deploys extended playing techniques inherited from the glory days of free jazz (Don Cherry, Bill Dixon, Jac Berrocal…) as well as leaders of the minimalist movement (Tony Conrad, Jon Hassell, La Monte Young…) of which he is one of the successors, arriving at a mix that ebulliently exits from his various horns and axes while simultaneously going through stomp boxes and electronic devices. Studio Soto presents the dynamic London sound artist Kaffe Matthews in a special Boston appearance. Joining her on the bill will be Boston’s Derek Hoffend. Both artists share an interest in creating autonomous sound environments and special frequencies through sonic furniture, though this performance presents their concert works’ modalities.

Placard Headphone Concert Festival

headphone.jpgHere we go for Placard’s 8th edition, third try out of a non-stop three month streaming headphone festival. Placard is a headphone concert festival, playing with concentration, intimacy,time warp,and teleportation.This year it goes on for 97 days non stop, in different cities. It functions under a mode of open program,open for headphone rooms to create performance spaces where performers are welcomed to perform. Both the headphone room ‘owner’ and the performers use the inscription site to self organize the global program. The placard ‘owner’ receives in his room performers who have submitted a inscription via the site , and streams the shows to the other headphonerooms either passive listeners or waiting to perform.The site is designed to simplify communication inbetween the performers and the organizers, using automatic emails notifying of incoming inscriptions , accepted deplaced or refused perfomances; also notifying performers of the creation of headphone rooms in their city. Hear the highly anticipated U.S. premiere of Fausto Romitelli’s Professor Bad Trip performed by Talea Ensemble; a Bang on a Can All-Stars’ premiere with Mira Calix; African crossover innovators Burkina Electric; Balinese Gamelan; music from Kyrgyzstan and much more! 12pm - 12am.

Live Stage: Luminokinetika [nl Rotterdam]

The project is realized like mutual relationship and interaction of sound (live electronics, piano and violin) and moving image (specially programmed video software). Based on Srnec’s affinity for experimentation, adventure and soulful play, the live act leads the visitors to the center of Srnec’s light objects – Luminokinetika. Observing, researching and recording the hidden light and sound traces which emanate from lumino objects, and which are indiscernible and invisible in everyday detection, the performance is giving a new experience to comprehend the synesthesia. Live Stage: Circuit Bending Mass Appeal [us NYC]

circuitbending.jpgATTENTION CIRCUIT BENDERS! The 2010 Make Music New York festival needs you to perform in the Circuit Bending Mass Appeal concert! :: June 21, 2010; 6:00 pm :: Gansevoort and 9th Avenue, New York City.

Circuit benders of all experience and skill levels are invited to take part in the Make Music New York Circuit Bending Mass Appeal concert. The concert will consist of a 30 minute interpretive chance-determined composition written by local artist, Phillip Stearns. Audience members will throw dice corresponding to groupings of performers and a simple graphic to be interpreted musically by that group. Performers are asked to meet at the stage area no later than 5:30 pm to receive score interpretation instructions and to help with setup. Performers are also asked to provide their own amplification, cables, and microphones where possible. Continue reading

Rubén Patiño (aka Pato) is a sound artist born in Barcelona in 1979. He is currently artist in residence at NK. He works in the field of Computer Music combining different sound synthesis techniques generated with Pure Data and Super Collider. All his sound pieces tend to have a stochastical approach and need to be experienced at high volume to appreciate its dynamic changes. He has performed several solo performances in Spain, France, Germany,England, Denmark and played in festivals like Zeppelin 2005, Transmediale 2006 and MEM 2007. As well as live improvisations with tabletop guitarrist Olivier Di Placido and occasional collaborations inside EVOL, a computer music cell leaded by Roc Jiménez de Cisneros. Continue reading
