Nathalie Miebach is a Boston-based artist who translates weather data into complex sculptures and musical scores.

“Recently, I have begun translating weather data collected in cities into musical scores, which are then translated into sculptures as well as being a source for collaboration with musicians. These pieces are not only devices that map meteorological conditions of a specific time and place, but are also functional musical scores to be played by musicians. While musicians have freedom to interpret, they are asked not to change the essential relationship of the notes to ensure that what is still heard is indeed the meteorological relationship of weather data.” (Scroll down for the Call for Composers.) Composer Philip Glass will be inducted into the Cincinnati-based American Classical Music Hall of Fame in a special ceremony Saturday evening, Oct. 1. That coincides with Mobile Symphony Orchestra’s performance of the Glass Violin Concerto featuring 25-year-old Bulgarian violinist Bella Hristova.

Orchestras worldwide are celebrating the composer’s 75th year. Glass will present the world premiere of his Symphony No. 9 by Bruckner Orchestra Linz in Austria before the symphony’s New York City premiere at Carnegie Hall on Glass’s 75th birthday, Jan. 31, 2012.

In the 1960s, Eliane Radigue began to move away from her earlier work in musique concrète as Pierre Henry’s assistant, with its focus on the juxtaposition of self-contained “musical objects,” and towards an exploration of sound as an evolution with subtle transformations.

… In a concert, her music floated in the air, coming from everywhere as music without a source, just a natural part of our world, just there, and without effort.

ABSTRACT: This chapter explores the role of storage in media art and, more specifically, its role in collaborative creativity within the field of networked music. Through a series of paired analyses of works that differentially emphasize transmission and storage or which employ different approaches to storage, the chapter discusses different opportunities, challenges, and issues related to storage in collaborative, networked art. Music by the Rova Saxophone Quartet and by Nick Collins frames a discussion of composition and improvisation; two works by The Hub initiate an analysis of the influence of technology on network design and on collaborative models of shared material and shared control; broadcast works by Max Neuhaus introduce the concept of active storage systems; the online sites WebDrum and Jamglue raise questions about network latency and the persistency of storage; and Bicycle Built for 2,000 and Graph Theory manipulate the level of awareness of storage mechanisms by various participants.

‘The Piano Etudes Project’ A Space for Play — Review by Les Loncharich, furtherfield.org: The Piano Etudes project by Jason Freeman, with Akito Van Troyer and Jenny Lin, is a move towards opening the forbidden city of musical composition. The project is based on piano etudes, musical compositions in which the pianist can rearrange connections between some open form pieces. Site visitors are invited to create their own etudes from four short compositions by Jason Freeman. Each etude is transcribed graphically into something that resembles an organizational chart. Each visual component of the chart has a corresponding audio note pattern. The pitch of a note pattern is roughly indicated by the height of a horizontal bar that is part of the graphic. A site user can select graphic elements and arrange them on a time-line to hear the resulting sound piece. Pieces created on the site can be saved and transcribed into musical notation so that pianists can perform pieces created by site visitors. More >>
