The Empty City

Playing a Cityscape as a Piano Score

pianola.jpgPianola City Music: Playing a Cityscape as a Piano Score ::

Pianola City Music attempts to overcome the almost inevitable urge to program and computerize our most imaginative ideas.

A physical model of the Dutch city of Eindhoven is rolled onto a drum and attached to a piano, so that its buildings hit the piano keys in a specific rhythm and the physical pattern of the city becomes expressed into a unique sound. The cityscape Eindhoven apparently produces a quite chaotic soundscape, although this might also be influenced by the methodology of it all, of which another beautiful example includes SolarBeat.

Sound Fields: Mapping Acoustic Territories [us NYC]

headphones22.jpgSound Fields: Mapping Acoustic Territories :: September 23-25, 2010 :: Brooklyn, NY :: :: Call for Submissions — Deadline: September 1, 2010.

image: alvaro_olivares

Exhibition to take place in a massive industrial space in Brooklyn. Sound Fields is about sound and the city, different acoustic territories and the control of them. In public places one wanders in a field of sounds that are ambient and discrete, loud and soft, which form intermittent relationships withone another. This acoustic mise en scène is often deemed distracting or cacophonous, leading to the marginalization of sound that is judged to be noise. Think of the subway, the library, or the church. Live Stage: Bassline [uk London]

bassline.jpgGraeme Miller :: Bassline :: July 9 - 26, 2009 :: Barbican Centre’s Car Park, London.

A series of projections reveal the landscape of the City as seen by 15 Londoners. See and hear the recorded testimonies of an hour- long walk made by the 15 participants accompanied by a double-bassist. The piece reveals participants’ memories, associations and perceptions of the area, capturing its unseen characteristics. Underscoring the work is a solo bass line mapping out the territory, based on a piece by Henry Purcell, to mark the 350th anniversary of this London-born composer.

Co-commissioned by barbicanbite09. Part of CREATE 09, part of the Barbican’s Do Something Different Weekend, part of Open Weekend. Continue reading

Walking in the City with Christina Kubisch

elettronica_matteomilani01.jpgMatteo Milani: Christina, could you tell us about your background, and how you arrived, through your career, to conceive the “Electrical Walks” project?

Christina Kubisch: When people asks me what I am, what do I do, I always struggle to answer. I am an artist, a composer, I work with magnetic inductance, but I also write pieces for other musicians. I am a performer, I draw. It’s hard to define me. I was a flautist, I studied Composition with Franco Donatoni at the G.Verdi Conservatory of Milan, and also Electronic Music with Angelo Paccagnini . At the end of my studies at the Mila Conservatory, I started a much more personal and effective research, attending for 2 years night courses in Electronics. During these courses, I discovered a telephonic amplifier, a small cube, from which came curious sounds. This cube had inside some coils, and it amplified the magnetic sounds close by. Fascinated by this system, I had 50 special cubes built, and with them I created my first installations. Continue reading

Live Stage: City Sonics: Festival of Sound Art [be Mons]

bg5.jpgCitySonics: Festival of Sound ArtCrossing a city of sounds :: June 26 - July 26, 2009 :: Mons.

For its seventh edition, City Sonics invades the city center of Mons with over thirty installations and environments. Once more, the festival questions sound and matter and listens to its stories about us and others, about here and there, about the sounds of the world and their sweet opposites. In twelve locations, “interdisciplinary” artists offer creations and dialogues with visitors of all ages and categories. This temporary enchantment of the city is poetic resistance against the dark planetary times that are upon us and the chaosounds that aggress us daily. Sound is a fantastic medium that addresses our body and senses: there is no need to be a music lover or contemporary art expert to enjoy these works of sound.

The path chosen by the sound pirates of City Sonics invites you on a stroll through space/time, created by these works in what becomes a space of permanent metamorphose. Continue reading
