“Aomori Water is a sound collage piece made in 1998, in Aomori Japan. I was in a residency with other artists. A Japanese sculptor was making a round house and wanted a sound piece to play in it. I recorded some very gentle waves lapping the beach, for the first part. And a very small mountain stream, flowing, for the second part. I layered 8 tracks. CONA Institute for Contemporary Arts Processing presents ZVO.ČI.TI. so.und.ing Collection, a podcast collection of Slovenian sound artists, composers of electroacoustic, experimental, algorithmic, electronic, improvised and composed works. The DVD release of the ZVO.ČI.TI so.und.ing Collection represents the final part of the multi-year project devised to be a continuous production of thematic radio and podcast audio programmes about specific authors and works of theirs that were created in the studio or performed live.

The purpose of the project is to connect and highlight Slovenian authors who make contemporary music in the music performance, sound, intermedia, performing, online and other areas and to present them, using existing communication possibilities, into the wider arena of world contemporary sound creativity. Brunel Electronic and Analogue Music (BEAM) Festival is a high-tech weekender. The festival takes place June 24- 26, 2011 at Brunel University in Uxbridge, London and features a programme of international artists working in music, sound and technology.

BEAM is now looking for submissions to the festival OPEN SPACE; a platform for artists to exhibit or perform their own work at the festival.We are offering a free weekend pass and accommodation on site to 10 selected OPEN SPACE artists. The deadline for all calls is 14th May 2011

Using Sound to Filter Bacterial Spores from Water — Acoustic trapping can remove bacterial spores from water, according to a new set of experiments funded by the US Army.

Measuring the quality of water on an ongoing basis is an important task but not one that is always straightforward. Taking samples for chemical analysis is simple enough and can be relatively easily automated. But determining what kind of bacteria are present is a little more tricky because these need to be filtered and removed from the water before testing. And because filters quickly become clogged and useless, this requires human intervention on a regular basis. Continue reading
