Martin Howse is occupied with an artistic investigation of the links between the earth (geophysical phenomena), software, and the human psyche (psychogeophysics), proposing a return to animism within a critical misuse of scientific technology. Through the construction of experimental situations (within process-driven performance, laboratories, walks, and workshops), material art works, and texts, Howse explores the rich links between substance or materials and execution or protocol, excavating issues of visibility and of hiding within the world. For the last ten years he has collaborated on numerous open-laboratory style projects and performed, published, lectured, and exhibited diversely. Carrier/Container/Detektor aims to break open the closed ecological circuit of material broadcast media by focusing attention on the means of reception and environmental conditions that affect both analogue and digital transmission, rather than on any extracted content within the broadcast message itself. Howse presents a series of test or measurement signals broadcast at predicted times of higher geophysical interference which could reasonably affect the reception of such signals. Radius features a new project monthly with statements by artists who use radio as a primary element in their work. Radius provides artists with live and experimental formats in radio programming. The goal is to support work that engages the tonal and public spaces of the electromagnetic spectrum.
