The main goal of the EyeHarp was to create the first gaze or head controlled musical instrument with similar expressive potentials to a traditional musical instrument. Zacharias Vamvakousis was inspired by the EyeWriter, a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus & custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes. Created especially for Wandsworth Park’s 300m avenue of trees, Mem Morrison’s Underscore is a sonic journey through the Thames – from Richmond Pier through to the Thames Gateway.

Using underwater recordings taken at several points along the Thames, created with sound designer and long-time collaborator Andy Pink, Mem creates a human version of the river with 25 local participants.

Playing with the imagery of boat signwriting and echoing the passing rowing races, Underscore heightens the architecture and alignment of trees, both visually and aurally. Continue reading
