Contemporary art has seen a marked increase in practices that defy traditional descriptions of media. Categories like painting, drawing, sculpture and photography no longer suffice to describe the full range of processes and forms that artists engage. Even relatively newer media categories like conceptual art, video art and performance art cannot encompass what many artists today do in their studios and in the streets. Many artists approach subject matter conceptually or thematically, choosing materials, processes and forms that resonate with a particular theme, while others complicate formal concerns directly by working through and across many media at once, or sequentially, arriving at products that resist easy categorization. Now celebrating its 30th year of service to artists, New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. (NRPA) has a distinguished history in two experimental fields, radio art and net art; it has commissioned, distributed and archived hundreds of works, thereby supporting and advancing many artists’ careers, and establishing itself as a vital resource for arts and educational institutions, and the general public. NRPA is the only organization in the United States that has as its core mission the commissioning of networked art by both emerging and established artists.

Although times are tough for many of you, we’re asking you to dig deep and make a contribution (tax-deductible for US Residents) that will enable NRPA to continue providing you with free access to our extraordinary projects: Turbulence.org, Networked_Performance, Networked_Music_Review, Networked: a (networked_book) about (networked_art), Upgrade! Leonardo Electronic Almanac has inherited a large archive of papers, articles and information. This material was held in the archive as historical documentation and as part of the revamp of LEA we have decided to revisit this history and compare it with contemporary developments.

LEA rekindled 1 is the first historical comparative issue of the Leonardo Electronic Almanac on the history and contemporary developments at the intersection of art, science and technology. Daito Manabe has a history of conducting quirky, painful experiments in which he administers shocks to the human body — usually his own — powerful enough to cause involuntary muscle contractions. He uses electricity, music, computers and video to expand on what were literally the earliest scientific experiments ever to be recorded photographically — the electrical shocks to the face of Parisians administered in the 19th century by Guillaume Duchenne.

Helena Gough is an English sound artist currently living in Berlin. Her work initially focused upon the collection and manipulation of ‘real-world’ sound material and the exploration of its abstract properties. Occasional deviations into synthetic and instrumental sources are now developing into more prominent ingredients. Each new sound-space is created by taking everything possible from the tiniest element, working to make something from nearly nothing.
