‘MIXTAPES: POPULAR MUSIC IN CONTEMPORARY ART’ is an exhibition that explores the relationships between contemporary visual arts and popular music, featuring artworks that date from the 1970s to the present day. The exhibition draws upon the distinct genres, styles and seminal moments in popular music, from the exuberance of glam rock through to the effortless cool of urban soul. Artists in the exhibition adopt these references to address the various identities and histories that are
commonly associated with music. In this way, music can be understood not only as an arrangement of sounds, but as a set of social and cultural relationships.

A key theme of ‘MIXTAPES’ is the notion of fandom, and the ways in which popular culture is absorbed and transformed into personal iconography. This is explored by artists in their use of album covers, lyrics, music videos, and the environments of musical experience. The exhibition borrows its name from the common term to describe a personal collection of music that was home-recorded onto cassette tape before the days of iPod playlists, YouTube channels and CD compilations.

Accompanying the exhibition ‘MIXTAPES’, the series of talks ‘HOW MUSIC CHANGED MY LIFE’ invites artists, critics, and music professionals to discuss seminal moments in their introduction to music. Through reference to specific albums, bands, or events, these presentations will look at the ways in which the experience of music shapes and affects our lives.
