Live Stage: Zoe Keating/Robert Hodgin [us San Jose, CA]

Zoe Keating and Robert Hodgin in a new, live multimedia work :: September 18, 2010; 9:00 pm :: ZERO1, Empire Drive-In inside South Hall, San Jose, CA.

As part of the Live Cinema program, cellist and composer Zoë Keating and digital artist Robert Hodgin will premier a new, live multimedia work. Composition for the ears meets composition for the eyes in a synchronized musical and visual journey through dark and light landscapes inspired by the musical theme of Keating’s new album, Into the Trees.

Reversing the usual model of musical score as accompaniment to cinematic visuals, in this performance Hodgin’s dynamically generated animations of a mysterious forest environment respond in real-time to Keating’s music and movement through a Bluetooth connection between her bow and a computer. The result is an experimental soundscape of live, layered cello merging seamlessly with Hodgin’s organic animations of projected imagery.

Classically trained from the age of eight, independent artist Zoë Keating (who by the way, has more than 1.4 million - yes million - Twitter followers!) uses a foot-controlled laptop to turn herself into one-woman orchestra. Robert Hodgin is an artist and programmer whose work ranges from simple 2D data visualizations to immersive 3D terrain simulations.

This performance takes place at Empire Drive-In inside South Hall (the blue and white semi-permanent tent behind the San Jose convention Center) on Saturday September 18, 2010 at 9pm.
