The orchestra consists of robot drummers that play steel drums “live”, under the direction of a performer. The interactive rhythms of the OMM sound out the movement, work and machinery of Turin industry. The subtext moves along the lines of the “Nag Hammadi”, the third-century A.D. Gnostic text, before plunging into contemporary mythologies through pieces inspired by the works of Ballard and Burroughs, exploring the relationship between, and the fusion of, human and machine. Musique a la Mode is a concert in which all the instruments are derived from the common day kitchen. Performed by a quartet including musicians from New York and Berlin - David Moss, David Linton, Michael Evans and Fast Forward. This will be the world premiere of this new group work.

The SonUmbra is a solar powered upside down umbrella/tree designed by Loop.pH. During the day the tree, like a real tree, provides shade. At night the tree turns on using the energy harnessed by the solar cells implanted in the fabric of the tree. The tree is designed to interact with people moving about the tree. The music world lost one of its most bizarre characters today, and I say that with the utmost affection. Maryanne Amacher was an amazing composer of sound installations, who occasionally taught courses at Bard. I first encountered her in 1980 at New Music America in Minneapolis. She had, as was her wont, fitted an entire house with loudspeakers, and the staff was in a state of jitters because at opening time she was still obsessively running around and changing things.
