Sine Wave Orchestra wins Edith Russ Stipend

The Edith Russ Site for Media Art awards work stipends has awarded a 2009 stipend to The Sine Wave Orchestra (Ken Furudate, Kazuhiro Jo, Daisuke Ishida, Mizuki Noguchi)

The fundamentals of our networked, global and technological culture and our resulting means of interaction are connected by the sine wave. We dance to them on our mp3 players, watch TV because of them and surf their peaks and troughs while making long distance phone calls. Sine waves form an ethereal and omnipresent framework, which become the tactile material the SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA (SWO) sculpts and manipulates through unique participatory sound events. Bagatelle Concrete

0.jpgBagatelle Concrete by Martin Pichlmair (AT) at CODED CULTURES - Exploring Creative Emergences:

Bagatelle Concrete is a pinball machine turned musical instrument. It is played for making music rather than achieving a high score. Consequently, the score board was replaced with customized speakers. The more successfully the player interacts with the machine, the more intense the accompanying soundtrack gets. The piece maintains the roughness of the electromechanical original game, mixing physical sounds happening on the playing field with manipulations of their recordings. All you hear originates in your style of play. Listen here. Continue reading

Sounds of Power | Listening of Fear [es Barcelona]

zeppelin.jpgZeppelin 2009: Sounds of Power | Listening of Fear :: December 10-12, 2009 :: Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture, Barcelona, Spain :: Call for Electronic Sound Works — Deadline: November 15, 2009.

We dedicate Zeppelin 2009: Sounds of Power | Listening of Fear to thinking about issues that have been insidiously encircling us for some time. We are concerned about signs that might suggest we’re going backwards in terms of hard-won social and intellectual achievements and freedoms. This concern led us to pose the following series of questions, which we hope will go some way to inspiring the pieces presented: Continue reading

Curated and moderated by Telcosystems, the focus of this session will be on different strategies of spatialisation in audiovisual art and how this alters our understanding of technology-driven forms of art.

He will present the research he has been doing over the last three years during his research fellowship at the National Academy of the Arts in Bergen (KHIB). HC Gilje writes regularly on these matters on his blog ‘Conversations with Spaces’. Continue reading

NMR Commission: "ItSpace" by Peter Traub

itspace_3001.jpgItSpace, by Peter Traub, creates a network of pages within the social networking site MySpace. Instead of people, the pages feature everyday household objects from the artist’s house. Each page has a photo of the object, a description, and most importantly, a 1-minute piece composed of samples of the object being struck, resonated, and so forth. All the pages, or objects, are ‘friends’ with each other, so that visitors who discover one object may jump to the others to see their profiles and hear their sounds. Visitors to the site are invited to create new ItSpace pages with pieces made from their own household objects and link those in as ‘friends’ of the original set. Listen to an Interview >> Continue reading

NMR Commission: "My Space Sound" by Sawako Kato

kato_logo_300.jpgMy Space Sound by Sawako Kato [Requires Mac OSX, Flash Player, and a fast Internet connection] - My Space Sound is an audio popup book about the village called MySpace. The story starts like this: “Once upon a time … there was a village called MySpace. It is the era when so-called ‘Web 2.0′ is still a novelty…” Users can participate in the story by entering their MySpace URL, as well as by just browsing the story. In a world composed of both facts and fictions extracted from the database, the audience gets a chance to rethink the chaotic social network space. Continue reading
