Carsten Nicolai: Static Fades by C. Doswald, K. Ottmann, B. Schroder – “Carsten Nicolai is a unique case in the sound art world. Somehow he’s the prototypal of the ideal contemporary sound artists: not classifiable merely as a musician, nor as an artist, but perfectly in between. He excellently combines technical and scientific knowledge with a clear vision. Especially being fond in science principles and practical use, he reflects the simple and purest beauty of involved structures, embodying it in a personal view that translates into perfectly balanced design. The “minimal” adjective, so often used to categorize his work, tells only 1/10th of the story. His art is more generally about “building beautiful systems”, whose rules are gently disrupting our acquired scientific knowledge. In this sense he can be easily considered a scientist, using art as inspiration for new methodologies. Continue reading
Diapason gallery for sound and intermedia presents Dead Violets (Jeff Surak, Bethany Moore, Thomas Ekelund) and dub/ber/vie, a voice & multichannel composition / concert performance by Jennifer Walshe & Bernhard Gal :: September 26, 2008; 8:00 pm :: 882 Third Avenue, 10th floor, Brooklyn (Sunset Park).
dub/ber/vie explores different points of intersection between the voice and the space in which it exists. Archipelago – sound cruises: European Sound Delta is an travelling artistic residency that took place during summer 2008: two boats simultaneously navigated upstream on the Rhine and Danube rivers from the North Sea and the Black Sea to finally meet in Strasbourg. On board and in each of the stopover cities, thirty international artists were invited to record their sound environment (field recordings, interviews, electromagnetic and sub-aquatic spheres…) and to use the shared sound materials to compose pieces and produce live concerts along the itinerary.
At the end of this trip, a floating listening lounge is unfolding as an Archipelago of creations: embarked on a specially fitted sightseeing boat (a 3000 Watts 4.1 embedded sound system), one will discover there the 27 sound pieces created on board by the residents but also the 10 imaginary audio landscapes from some ten guest composers. Jeff Talman—A Play of Flows – The Mediterranean Sea “tuned” to a Genovese landmark :: October 23–November 4, 2008 :: Galleria Mazzini, Genoa, Italy.
Galleria Mazzini, the elegant 19th Century architectural gem in the heart of Genoa, Italy, serves as the framing space for international artist Jeff Talman’s newly commissioned installation A Play of Flows. The work’s sonic environment, based on site resonance and the nearby Mediterranean Sea, initiates a meditation on the contributing currents that enliven this spectacular urban site. Recorded at a nearby Genoese beach, crashing wave sounds provide the sonic source material for the installation. Talman filtered these sounds to align them with the resonant frequencies or “tuning” of the Galleria. The sea wave sounds, shaped into a series of spatial and site-harmonic progressions, engage the architecture as the “voice” of the sea sings in the Galleria, turning it into a vast resonating instrument. The Brown University Department of Visual Art presents: Seth Cluett – Visiting Artist Lecture :: September 23, 2008; 5:00 pm :: List Art Center, Room 225, Brown University, Providence, RI.
Seth Cluett is a composer and visual artist whose work includes photography, drawing, video, sound installation, concert music, performance, and theoretical writing. His pieces are an exploration of the role of sound in everyday life. Operating at the boundary between the auditory and other senses, his work engages sound’s ability to be both collectively shared and distinctly personal. Many of his pieces investigate the acoustic signature of specific locations, where sound is experienced as an activity (audio tourism), architectural property, or as geological process.
