Live Stage: Aura Satz' "Glissolalia" [uk London]

1141716707414.jpgSoundtrap III: Aura Satz’ sound installation Glissolalia :: June 27 - July 20 (Fri-Sun, 12-6pm) :: Preview & Live Performance: June 27; 6-9 pm :: Beaconsfield, London.

In SOUNDTRAP III: GLISSOLALIA, a Beaconsfield Commission 2008, Aura Satz explores ghostly presence and illusions through performance and sound, often focussed on unusual sonic devices, early musical instruments and automata. This new commission explores acoustic illusions and plays on the vocal quality of non-human instruments. It merges the musical concept of ‘glissando’ (the gliding or sliding from one note to another), and the idea of ‘glossolalia’ (religious speaking in tongues, or fluent unintelligible utterances). It is being developed in dialogue with musician Aleks Kolkowski. Continue reading

Laser Sound Performance at Sonar 2008

edwin-van-der-heide-2.jpgLaser Sound Performance (LSP] by Edwin van der Heide at Sonar2008.

On June 19, 20 and 21, Edwin van der Heide presented his “LSP”, a performance where image and sound play equally important roles. Sound / video combinations often reduce the spatial perception of sound because of the two-dimensional nature of the image. The performance “LSP” used audio controlled lasers to create a three-dimensional environment that totally immerses the audience and allows for a constant change of perspective. Image and sound originate from the same real-time computer generated sine wave composition. “LSP” represents a system of direct equivalence of image and sound, where frequency ratios in sound, de-tuning and phase shifts have their direct visual counterparts. The second volume of the Situated Technologies Pamphlet Series asks the question: what lessons can architecture learn from software development, and more specifically, from the Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) movement? Written in the form of a quasi-license, Urban Versioning System 1.0 posits seven constraints that, if followed, will contribute to an open source urbanism that radically challenges the conventional ways in which cities are constructed.
