Interview: Golan Levin

307275574_f679e27c5d_m.jpgGolan Levin is an artist/engineer interested in the exploration of new modes of reactive expression. His work focuses on the design of systems for the creation, manipulation and performance of simultaneous image and sound, as part of a more general inquiry into formal languages of interactivity, and of nonverbal communications protocols in cybernetic systems. Through performances, digital artifacts, and virtual environments, Levin applies creative twists to digital technologies that highlight our relationship with machines, make visible our ways of interacting with each other, and explore the intersection of abstract communication and interactivity. Presently he is Associate Professor of Electronic Art at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. Continue reading

Vaibhav Bhawsar's "Udder-Utter"

udder.jpgVaibhav Bhawsar wrote the following on A-bog: Udder-Utter is an instrument that utters syllabic sounds derived from the Devanāgarī alphabet, which is used to write Hindi and other Indo-Arabyan languages. It’s playability is inspired by the gestures involved in milking a cow. The sounds that this instrument utters are intended to be a mix of discrete and continuous in nature and are rhythmic due to their syllabic / phonetic origins. I see the Udder as an instrument for constructing and rupturing meaning through its playability, by using syllabic sounds to construct monosyllabic meanings and imagery to extract formal elements. Live Stage: Cellar Door [fr Paris]

cellardoor.jpgCellar Door by Loris Greaud :: February 14 - April 27, 2008 :: Opening: February 14, 2008; 8pm - midnight :: Palais De Tokyo, 13 avenue du Président Wilson, 75116 Paris.

Cellar Door is an ambitious artistic enterprise: a colossal organism engendered by an original music score that distends through space and time. This mutant form of exhibition is guided in real time by a studio and an engineer located at the heart of the display; they activate the artworks, produce the assemblage of sounds, and prompt its accelerations and retractions.
