Andrea Polli is a digital media artist living in New York City. Her current works are hybrid (art/science) collaborations with atmospheric scientists to develop systems for understanding storm and climate data through sound - a process called sonification. Recent collaborations include: Atmospherics/Weather Works, a spatialized sonification of highly detailed models of storms that devastated the New York area; Heat and the Heartbeat of the City, a series of sonifications of actual and projected climate in Central Park, the heart of New York City and one of the world’s first locations for climate monitoring (a Turbulence Commission); and N., a real-time multi-channel sonification and visualization of weather in the Arctic. Developed by the Cité de la Musique in Paris, Replay Marclay is the first major exhibition presented in Australia celebrating the work of the New York-based moving image artist, and is the first solo exhibition to be staged in ACMI’s Screen Gallery. Christian Marclay’s astonishing work explores the overlapping of aural and visual realms in popular culture through a variety of mediums including video, film, sculpture, photography, music and DJ performances. By reframing the media landscape, he challenges us to consume the sounds and images that form our cultural landscape in a new way. Continue reading

Mr. Resistor is an innovative class in which students are taught how to create musical instruments from found electronics and other objects. Armed with two toy robots named Freddy and Teddy, a violin with a bow made out of cassette tape, and a synthesizer assembled from a 1960s electric guessing game, last weekend students at Parsons the New School for Design took to the stage to perform rock songs they created out of these and other found objects.

The performance took place at The Openhouse in SoHo and was born out of a burgeoning DIY music movement where artists take the debris of everyday life, for example an amp made from a Ritz cracker box and instruments made from Gameboys, irons and electronic toys, and turn them into musical instruments to play at events such as Handmade Music Night and Music for People and Thingamajigs. In this project called “the bubbles of radio” - created at AHO in a research-driven course called Tangible interactions - Ingeborg Marie Dehs Thomas uses critical, visual design as a way of exploring the perception of many kinds of electromagnetic fields. The project answered the question: “How can we use the increasingly radio-saturated landscape for creative or functional purposes?”

Inspired by Hertzian Tales by Dunne and Raby as well as other projects including Cell Phone Disco, Ingeborg explored many critical design products or services that would engage with the landscape of radio. Continue reading

We are very pleased to announce the startup of the Ear to the Earth Network, an international network of musicians, composers, sound artists, visual artists, scientists, environmental activists, and members of the public who are concerned about the environment. The focal point of the Network is its website.

The activities of the Network include an annual festival of environmental sound, images, and multimedia in New York City. The Network also produces forums and other events, fosters research and documentation, and enables an exchange of information, sounds, materials, and ideas within a growing community worldwide. And by providing access to the sounds of the world, the Network provides a vehicle for paying ongoing attention to the state of the world. Continue reading

DJ Spooky is on his way Antarctica to shoot, edit and score the film Terra Nova: The Antarctica Suite. Every sound in the film will be made from the sound of ice (environmental, geological, magnetic, atmospheric etc). It headlines at Sundance’s Digital Film section this January. xxxxx-workshops: [in]tolerance presents a series of constructivist workshops specially programmed for the ClubTransmediale 2008 festival, emphasising making and connection within the field of the existent. Workshops are led by international, field-expert practitioners, extending over realms of environmental code, noise, signal transmission, reception, and electromysticism. The workshops will utilise household materials and chemistry, readily-available electronics components, free software and the GNU toolbase. Continue reading

The 22nd Prix Ars Electronica - International Competition for CyberArts is open for entries. From its very inception in 1987, the Prix Ars Electronica has been conceived as an open platform for various disciplines at the intersection of art, technology, science and society. More than 3,300 submissions in 2007 have further enhanced the Prix Ars Electronica’s reputation as an internationally representative competition honoring outstanding works in the cyberarts. The categories Digital Musics, Digital Communities and Hybrid Art are great indicators for this trend.The aim of the competition is to continually keep the Prix Ars Electronica updated in line with leading-edge developments in the dynamic field of cyberarts.
