Live Stage: 8 Silences [online]

Radius, Episode 04: 8 Silences by Art of Failure :: April 9 and April 16 at 8:00 pm (CST) :: online.

8 Silences (part of the Laps series) offers a sensible representation of Internet by broadcasting audio streams that travel and reverberate trough the web. Initially silents, the streams progressively incorporate an infinity of transformations or “errors” that modify the sound as it circulates on the network. These alterations are comparable to a form of erosion caused by the network space – they are a key to allow different mental representations of this digital topography. Presented as a live performance, 8 silences is a sound immersion in the heart of data flows.

Episode 04 presents a special mobile broadcast of 8 Silences from Urbana, IL, USA as part of the art exhibition Bricoleurs at the Independent Media Center in association with the 2011 Boneyard Arts Festival. Continue reading

111111 UpStage Festival [online]

The fifth annual 111111 UpStage Festival is now accepting proposals.

UpStage is a web-based platform for cyberformance: remote performers combine images, animations, audio, web cams, text and drawing in real-time for an online audience.

This year, the festival coincides with the full moon, and we encourage proposals that incorporate this, but you do not need to be restricted to this theme. The only limitations are that all shows must be created and performed in UpStage, and must not be longer than 20 minutes and 11 seconds (during the festival a performance begins every half hour). Live Stage: Active Listeners [nl Rotterdam + online]

Test_Lab: Active Listeners — showcasing new technology-inspired modes of live musical performance that radically transform the performer’s relationship with the audience :: March 31, 2011; 8:00 – 11:00 pm :: Eendrachtsstraat 10, Rotterdam and streamed live online.

The lyrics to Daft Punk’s “Technologic” – “Touch it, bring it, pay it, watch it, turn it, leave it, start, format it” – allude to the omnipresence of technology in our daily lives and the many different ways in which we engage with it. At a Daft Punk live show, however, it’s predominantly the artists themselves that interact with technology, through musical interfaces. The audience, by contrast, passively observes or dances but rarely touches, brings, starts or formats any of the technology involved in the performance. Yet there are artists who explore technology’s potential to radically break with the traditional performer-audience relationship. Continue reading

“Distance versus Desire” by Eric Kluitenberg

Distance versus Desire* by Eric Kluitenberg:

Clearing the ElectroSmog

The desire to transcend distance and separation has accompanied the history of media technology for many centuries. Various attempts to realise the demand for a presence from a distance have produced beautiful imaginaries such as those of telepresence and ubiquity, the electronic cottage and the reinvigoration of the oikos, and certainly not least among them the reduction of physical mobility in favour of an ecologically more sustainable connected life style.
