Appropriating, processing, and interweaving several existing webcam feeds of Mount Fuji, FUJI is a durational piece for four seasons. FUJI examines the authenticity of networked, spatiotemporal experiences of distant nature, sacred sites, and sacred icons. The overwhelming immediacy and delirious variety of live broadcasts available via the Internet, as well as the current incitement to communicate with distant but real subjects alter our experience of space which is invariably mediated through images. In FUJI, the gap between the real place and its representation no longer exists. FUJI is a voyage across deep time, experienced minute by minute, day by day — a longing for a place that could never be, yet, evidently, always is. Continue reading

“Jenniches’ webcam works depend on the availability of generic user-controlled Internet cameras and are constructed over a long period of time — time spent watching the selected scenario, remotely — life-time spent observing the world. Thousands of images are made during a methodological process of deep-looking through this mediated network eye. Launching in June 2009 (coincident with the International Year of Astronomy) are new online projects by New York-based artists Jamie O’Shea and Joe Winter and a previously unpublished poem by artist Alec Finlay. As part of the web-based platform Beam Me Up, guest curator Sarah Cook has invited these artists as well as 2 scientists — Guillaume Belanger and Jayanne English — to reflect on the nature of perceiving and representing space and outer space. Two more contributions commissioned by Sarah Cook will follow later in the summer.

Beam Me Up is a global project by Xcult.org, based in Basel, which will continue into 2010 inviting art contributions and essays which seek to interpret concepts of space and cyberspace using both pictures and texts, artistic and philosophical models as well as scientific experience. A new body of work by British artist Susan Collins combines digital technologies with the classical traditions of English landscape painting to present an extraordinary visual exploration into the natural cycles of tide, time and light.

Commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and De La Warr Pavilion, Seascape consists of a series of gradually unfolding digital seascapes created using imagery captured in real time by webcams installed at five key coastal vantage points between Margate and Portsmouth. Continue reading

“Basically its a low budget breakfast bar controlled by the daily habits of a bunch of hens on Gorgie City Farm in Edinburgh. Each time an egg gets laid a signal is sent to the web enabled toaster (courtesy of arduino and my excellent colleague Ian Campbell!) sets the coils in motion and returns the action of egg laying to the gallery goers as hot toast for consumption! Not only that, on the breakfast table is a peck controlled iTunes soundsystem, each peck on the piezo mic’ attached to the chicken feed bowl causes the ‘Cock Rock Disco’ playlist to skip forward a track - perpetual flutterings of chicken inspired songs! Building Bridges is the motto of Munich’s 850th birthday. The project A Day in a Life is going to establish virtual bridges: Munich is linked via livestreaming with some parts of the world. The public place Wittelsbacher Platz is connected via image and sound with – since now - the following cities: Curitiba / Brazil, Skopje / Macedonia, Wellington / New Zealand, London / England, Sendai / Japan.

Artists of diverse backgrounds are involved, working mainly through performative strategies. Sceneries involving the passers-by in every city are created. For example you may see four people of four countries at the same time on four screens, communicating via webcam their wishes oder questions as a sort of statement. Continue reading

The new project by RECYCLISM ™ is hitting, as many media artists are doing yet, the prosperous muse of wireless technologies. 2.4Ghz™ exploits wireless netcams populating the urban space in a very simple but interesting way. BNJMN™ GAULON (alias Benjamin Gaulon) has been riding the streets of a few European cities with a wireless video receiver, like the ones used by parents to remotely watch over their babies. His aim was to detect and record the floating video signals emitted by those network cameras like in the historical work Life’s a User’s Manual by Michelle Teran. Continue reading
