Wasteland Twinning Network Forum — An exploration of urban wastelands and networked transdisciplinary practice :: September 21-23, 2012 :: Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik (ZK/U), Berlin.

The Wasteland Twinning Network hijacks the concept of ‘City Twinning’ and applies it to urban wastelands in order to generate a network for parallel research and action.

The Forum will bring together the international project partners of the Wasteland Twinning Network from Europe, Asia, USA and Australia. Hosted at the Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik, the Forum will feature presentations, guest speakers, critical debates, Twinning Ceremonies, wasteland interventions and workshops. Continue reading

Urban sensing technologies are an increasing feature of urban design and media design. From “Senseable” to “Sentient” cities, as well as numerous projects that deploy mobile and embedded sensors to monitor everything from air pollution to traffic patterns, urban processes are now unfolding through wireless sensor technologies. This paper will focus on a particular aspect of urban sensing projects, namely those actual and speculative proposals that suggest wireless sensing technologies are a way to achieve more sustainable and efficient cities. Radius Episode 26: InharmoniCity by U.S.O. Project :: June 2, 3, 9 and 10; 12:00 pm (CST).

InharmoniCity realizes an urban symphony by using sounds normally hidden from our perception and revealed through unusual transducers.

The track Girl Running, establishes a dialogue between the sounds synthesized with Xenakis’ UPIC and the sound outputs of invisible electronic objects. By carrying these magnetic fields into the audible range, the sounds have been suspended, intimately researched, and orchestrated in order to cross the physical borders of aural perception. The « Book of Stamps » by the sounds artist Art Clay is a travel guide between sonic landscapes from cities to urban cultures. The sheets of the book provide a “recording surface” and the ink stamps with their various patterns provide the ability to place sounds into the book. Together they act as an interactive tangible interface for a variety of time based musical tasks that form a collaborative composition by its users. Continue reading

In The Urban Crisis: To celebrate the launch of its two new graduate programs focused on urban transformation, Parsons The New School for Design has organized In the Urban Crisis, a lecture series featuring leading voices shaping the global dialogue about city development. Organized by Miguel Robles-Duran, the series highlights core themes of the MS in Design and Urban Ecologies and MA in Theories of Urban Practice, both launching fall 2012, which explore the ways cities are shaped and reshaped through planning, public policy, development, and architecture.
