A one-day visual art event, with a sound performance by Team Sports. The Nihilists is a series of outdoor installations by Stefhan Caddick, temporarily located on the Sugar Loaf mountain near Abergavenny, South Wales (UK). The installations generate electricity in order to illuminate their futility.

Team Sports (Matthew Lovett, Jimmy Ottley & Ian Watson) is a sound performance that explores the relationship between a musician and their surroundings. Continue reading

MOEBIUS: Environment(s) + Art

Open call for submissions to MOEBIUS, new journal of iARTA, the Initiative for Advanced Research in Technology and the Arts, a research group at the University of North Texas. Special consideration will be given to submissions received by September 1, 2011.

MOEBIUS examines the convergence of theory & practice in the electronic arts. We are currently seeking submissions for a special inaugural issue on the topic of Environment(s) + Art. Inhabiting their own potential moment of encounter, certain artworks have the capacity to create heterotopias of the senses. Remembering Foucault’s concept in human geography, heterotopia describes place and spaces of otherness. This exhibition offers an accumulation of work by international and Aotearoa New Zealand artists whose practices offer sensory and immersive encounters and thus propose new avenues to our phenomenological experience of the world.

Forecast: Communicating Weather and Climate :: January 24, 2011; 7:00 - 9:00 pm :: 2nd Floor Gallerias, Washington State Convention Center, 800 Convention Place, Seattle, WA.

Over the past year, Carrie Bodle worked with Miles Logsdon, UW faculty member in the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences, and was inspired by his use of visualizations in detecting patterns in oceanographic research data. This collaboration resulted in Bodle making eight embroidered Hovmoller plots displaying chlorophyll-a patterns for different regions of the Northeast Pacific Ocean over the time period of December 2002-July 2010. These images are visualizations of data from the NASA SeaWiFs Satellite for an area off the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. A detail image of one of the plots is above. Continue reading

2011 Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project: Environmental Sculpture Installations, Call for Proposals — Deadline: February 11, 2011 :: Kuan Shu Educational Foundation, Lane 79, Wu Lang Street, Taichung City 403, Taiwan.

Artists from all countries are invited to send a proposal for a site-specific outdoor sculpture installation that will involve working with local elementary school children to create an artwork focused on making the Cheng Long Wetlands a ‘greener’ place where biodiversity can flourish. This year the emphasis will be on sculpture installations in the waters of the wetlands that can improve the habitat for wildlife and increase biodiversity as well as provide aesthetic enjoyment and raise public awareness about the importance of wetlands.
