Live Stage: Discontrol Party [fr Paris]

Discontrol Party by Samuel Bianchini (EnsadLab / DRii) :: June 24-25, 2011 8:00 pm - 2:00 am :: La Gaíté lyrique, 3, bis rue Papin, Paris.

Discontrol Party is a dispositif which brings together two worlds: that of state-of-the-art surveillance techniques and that of partying. The dancefloor/ live music venue/ performance space will appear in the dual spotlight of a partying event and a data-driven control and surveillance system (computer vision, RFID, recording by smartphones, etc.) The main space of the Gaíté Lyrique becomes for the space of one evening a night-club set up as a control room: far from light effects or other VJing, the participants, while partying, are confronted by multiple visualizations of the information technology system which observes them and seeks to analyze their behavior. (Im)Mobility Exploring the Boundaries of Hypermobility

Open 21: (Im)Mobility Exploring the Boundaries of Hypermobility:

Advanced communications technologies seem to be paving the way for an increase in physical and motorized mobility. At the same time, these accelerating flows of data and commodities stand in sharp contrast to the elbow room afforded to the biological body, which in fact is forced to a standstill. And while data, goods and capital have been freed of their territorial restrictions, the opposite is true for a growing proportion of the world’s population: border regimes, surveillance and identity control are being intensified at a rapid pace. In short, we are seeing both an uncurbed and uncontrolled increase of mobility and segregating filtrations. This issue of Open explores the internal contradictions of prevailing mobility regimes and their effects on social and physical space. Continue reading

Orbitando Satélites / Orbiting Satellites [es Gijón]

Plataforma Cero of LABoral presents Orbitando Satélites / Orbiting Satellitesa critical and artistic investigation of satellites :: May 10-14, 2011 :: LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Los Prados, 121, 33394 Gijón (Asturias) Spain.

Orbitando Satélites proposes an exercise in the visualisation and investigation of these “rarae aves” that operate in habitually imperceptible frequencies and distances. We listen to them with DIY antenas and radios, showing how to locate them and observe them with free hardware and software.

In the tradition of the independent groups involved in the creation of free/libre infrastructures the meeting unites amateurs and experts, from various countries and cultures, to develop a declaration which poetically sketches this occult ring that surrounds us. Continue reading

Live Stage: Magid + Bunting [nl Amsterdam]

Disclosing The Invisible: Jill Magid and Heath Bunting; Moderator: Huib Haye van der Werf, curator Nederlands Architectuurinstituut :: March 25, 2011; 1:30 pm :: Stedelijk Museum, Paulus Potterstraat 13, Amsterdam.

WikiLeaks’ recent exertions have revealed that a great deal of information is never made public. Their activities, along with the rapid advances in technology and recently in politics, have resulted in shifts in power relations in the public domain. Governments, private organisations, the media and the public at large are seemingly being obliged to reconsider their roles and tasks. The work of Heath Bunting and Jill Magid centres on notions of power and control, and the ways in which these are underpinned by visibility, invisibility and secrecy. Continue reading

[-empyre-] Contesting the Netopticon

[image: etay by jhave] January on -empyre- soft-skinned space: Contesting the Netopticon — Moderated by Simon Biggs (UK/Australia) with invited discussants Joseph Delappe, Marc Garrett, Davin Heckman, Patrick Lichty, Heidi May, Christina Spiesel and Jon Thomson & Alison Craighead :: Simon Biggs wrote:

Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) described an apparatus he termed the Panopticon, intended to condition the behaviour of subjects by disallowing them knowledge of whether they were being observed or not, causing them to fear they were. The space Bentham sought to control was the prison, seeking to replace capital punishment with a penal system focused on rehabilitation. Janet Semple’s study (Semple) evidences Bentham’s correspondence, suggesting an intent to establish for-profit penal institutions based on his Panoptic model. Continue reading

“The 3rdi Project” Now Live

[Image by Brad Farwell] Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal’s latest work, The 3rdi Project, began capturing images on December 15 from the “third eye” in the back of Bilal’s head — a surgically-implanted camera. The 3rdi Project will be unveiled in Doha, Qatar as part of the Told/Untold/Retold exhibition that inaugurates the new Arab Museum of Modern Art near Education City, Doha’s intellectual hub.

The camera spontaneously transmits one image per minute to a website, with the inaugural images to be displayed in a custom-designed room in the Doha gallery. Bilal’s piece will be part of the museum’s new permanent collection, 20 years in the making, including more than 6,000 works by Arab artists from North Africa to the Gulf, from the 1920s to the present day.
