“Under the Sign of Labor” by Sabeth Buchmann

I. From the Dematerialized Object to Immaterial Labor

Anglo-American Conceptual art, which emerged in the mid to late 1960s, displayed a new interest in linguistics and information theory that clearly distinguished it from the industrially coded production aesthetics of Pop art and Minimalism. The thesis that went along with this was that replacing author-centered object production with linguistic or information-based propositions represented a challenge not only to any traditional “material-object paradigm” (Art & Language) but also to those aspects of craftsmanship within “production values” that are crucial to any claims to authorship and the “work,” and this perhaps helps to explain how and why the history of Conceptual art has mistakenly been written as a history of “dematerialization of the object.”(1) Continue reading

Pandora’s Sound Box is an interactive multimedia exhibition conceived to destabilize and reactivate our vision of the current global political landscape through performance, sound, video and site-specific installations. The exhibition demonstrates a kind of experiment of the associative imagination by which the viewer may explore other dimensions of experience while simultaneously becoming a performer. Out of Character | Vuk Cosic [uk Perth]

Out of Character | Vuk Cosic :: August 1 - November 2009 :: Threshold artspace, Horsecross, Mill Street, Perth, UK.

Horsecross is delighted to present Out of Character – the first solo exhibition in Scotland by internationally recognised artist Vuk Cosic described as ‘an archaeologist of the future’. The exhibition features new commissions and acquisitions, which echo Cosic’s earlier signature works. They are showing alongside the artist’s own favourites from the permanent Horsecross collection of contemporary art. Out of Character reflects Cosic’s interest in media archaeology and his belief that the role of the artist is to move away from the blind adoption of engineering defaults and instead to suggest ‘constructive abuse’ of technology. Connect to Google Earth and find Eindhoven, a small city in The Netherlands. As you get closer, a number of YouTube videos appear on top of the city. As you bring up each video you start to experience what is taking place there. Continue reading
