Live Stage: Facebook Re-enactments [us NYC]

Facebook Re-enactments by Ursula Endlicher (part of Levels of Undo) :: September 9 - October 30, 2009 :: Opening: September 9; 6:00 -8:00 pm :: Location One, 26 Greene Street, New York City.

Facebook Re-enactments is a video-performance piece based on this year’s Location One Virtual Residency (May 15 - August 15, 2009) artists names on Facebook: Jessica Curry, Ursula Endlicher, Narinda Reeders, and Ben Woodeson.

Responding to Facebook’s “logic” and “environment”, social behavior, and the intrinsic habits of its users — plus personal experiences with name misspellings triggering mix-ups and false links — I was inspired to question online identity once again. (After the high of net art questioning “ID” online in the late 1990s it seems interesting to me that it is still very much a topic). So I searched on these (our) four names — to possibly find out more about my residency mates — and used the returned “identities” and images for each name search as scenarios to be restaged and reenacted in RL. “The City is Creative” by Michelle Teran

In The City is Creative — by Michelle Teran — everyday performative acts, as depicted on YouTube videos, are located and reenacted in the city where they took place.

People meet in different ways now, even in the most strangest manner. Imagine flying over a city and witnessing all the things that are taking place there. Connect to Google Earth and find Eindhoven, a small city in The Netherlands. As you get closer, a number of YouTube videos appear on top of the city. As you bring up each video you start to experience what is taking place there. Continue reading

During recent years the term re-enactment and the practices it refers to have enjoyed increasing success in the artistic context. On one hand, the success of re-enactment appears to be connected to a parallel, vigorous return to performance art, both as a genre practiced by the new generations, and as an artistic practice with its own historicization.
