WalkSpace: Beirut-Venice invites the participant on a drift through Venice guided from Beirut and in Beirut guided from Venice. The work involves two simultaneous dérives through the historic cities of Beirut and Venice, connected in real time to each other and to the world. Two interconnected groups of participants will walk in each city, each receiving instruction and guidance from the other as they wander, get lost and explore …the psychogeographical ambiance of the city. Federico Díaz, acclaimed Prague-based artist, is creating a self-replicating, site-specific sculptural installation shaped by viewer-inspired data that gives new meaning to the term “going viral.” Imagine thousands of black spheres morphing according to changes in ambient light generated by the fluid interactivity of viewers. A mathematical program enables two robots to build, and together, arrange about 2,000 5-centimeter-diameter balls every 12 hours. Continue reading

Touched: A Space of Relations explores the sense of touch as a metaphor of bodily presence and an extension across boundary. Actualizing our understandings of public/ private and inside/ outside, touch is a gesture system. [The artists have placed tweets in front of Mt. Fuji, a symbol of Japan’s strength and perseverance] Sea of Tweets — by Mark Skwarek, Tamiko Thiel, and John Craig Freeman — allows viewers to tweet wishes to those in Japan affected by the terrible earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. Participants tweets from around the globe are transformed into paper cranes; the first crane tweets are already in place.

Tweets will also be placed around the northeast coast line of Japan focusing on areas affected by the tsunami, but viewers might not be able to see them there until the infrastructure is restored. In the meantime, paper cranes will be placed in other parts of Japan where people can see them without problems. The rest of the world will be given the telepresence experience of Japan’s coast. Once conditions return to normal in the areas affected by the disaster, viewers will also be able to see the cranes on-site, riding on the waves of the Pacific coast.

ABSTRACT: Stress is an undesirable offshoot of any kind of travel, forced or voluntary. To soothe the stress of travel, today’s mobile individuals — neo-nomads — engage in tactics of re:location, the practice of re-assembling a familiar and cushioned personal space, an image of home. The spaces and objects we design with mobility in mind should focus on bringing comfort to these mobile individuals. We learn however that in today’s consumerist, “liquid” and hypermobile world, linkages between PIGS — People, Information, Goods and Spaces — matter more than PIGS themselves. The territories of neo-nomads relate to linkages and are dynamic as a result.

stylus was created in response to the Pulitzer building, which was designed by architect Tadao Ando. As a visual artist whose contributions to contemporary art span three decades, Ann Hamilton’s installations are notable in part for their capacity to weave a broad palette of media into engaging sensory environments. Conceived in response to the Pulitzer’s mission to be both sanctuary and laboratory, stylus is structured around live acoustic elements.
