Terra Nova, a remarkable mixture of theatre and state-of-the-art image technology, will have its premiere at the Rencontres d’été of La Chartreuse, organized in collaboration with the Festival of Avignon. Terra Nova is created by Eric Joris, Peter Verhelst, Stef De Paepe, Robby Cleiren and CREW. A performance and immersive adventure at once.

Immersive virtual worlds have grown enormously in popularity in recent years. The most popular of them, Second Life (SL), which was developed by Linden Labs in 2003, now has 1.4 million users. Although the exact number of active SL users is not known, there is no question that there has been a dramatic growth in users of virtual worlds in general: according to Castranova (2007), total registrations to virtual worlds were well over 100 million as far back as 2007. The fifth annual 111111 UpStage Festival is now accepting proposals.
UpStage is a web-based platform for cyberformance: remote performers combine images, animations, audio, web cams, text and drawing in real-time for an online audience.
This year, the festival coincides with the full moon, and we encourage proposals that incorporate this, but you do not need to be restricted to this theme. The only limitations are that all shows must be created and performed in UpStage, and must not be longer than 20 minutes and 11 seconds (during the festival a performance begins every half hour). Performance, All Over the Map: On Chris Salter’s “Entangled” by Maria Chatzichristodoulou [aka Maria X], Rhizome.org:
Chris Salter’s Entangled: Technology and the Transformation of Performance (MIT Press, March 2010) is a massive undertaking and a book long overdue. In this ambitious project, Salter sets out to provide a historical overview of the intersections between technology and artistic performance in order to demonstrate the profound entanglement in the historical trajectories of both sets of practices and developments. Entangled seeks to address how technological developments have altered our making and perception of artistic performance and the socio-political, cultural and economic contexts of such developments (p. xiii). Furthermore, Salter understands the histories of new media arts, theater, and other stage-based artforms as divided in a tension between the technophilic and technophobic, and his investigation is an attempt to fill this gap.
