Live Stage: Other – The Nihilists [uk Monmouthshire]

Other: The Nihilists :: July 16, 2011; 8:00 – 10:00 pm :: (starting from) Mynyndd Llanwenarth Car Park, Grid Ref: SO268167, Sugar Loaf, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire NP7 7LA, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

A one-day visual art event, with a sound performance by Team Sports. The Nihilists is a series of outdoor installations by Stefhan Caddick, temporarily located on the Sugar Loaf mountain near Abergavenny, South Wales (UK). The installations generate electricity in order to illuminate their futility.

Team Sports (Matthew Lovett, Jimmy Ottley & Ian Watson) is a sound performance that explores the relationship between a musician and their surroundings. Continue reading

Voices of the Sea Artists Commissions

Voices of the Sea is a unique commissioning opportunity created by a partnership of arts organisations. In Brighton and Hove, UK: Fabrica, Blast Theory, Brighton Festival, Lighthouse, Photoworks, the University of Brighton and in France, the Musee de Beaux Arts Calais. We seek to commission two artists, each with a strong track record, to create two major new works, responding to the coastal context and maritime heritage of South East England.

The commissions are inspired by The Boat Project by Lone Twin, beginning its maiden voyage in 2012 and visiting Brighton as part of Brighton Festival. Continue reading

Käthe-Kollwitz-Prize 2011: Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller — Award Ceremony and opening of Pariser Platz :: June 28, 2011; 7:00 pm :: Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz, Plenarsaal, Berlin.

The Käthe Kollwitz Prize 2011 has been awarded jointly to Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. On this occasion the artist duo from Canada will be showing four works in the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts). The exhibition at Pariser Platz will focus on the construction and deconstruction of acoustic perception and illusionist spaces. The real occurrences in Cardiff’s and Miller’s stories only reveal themselves when people enter the space and engage their visual and tactile senses. Continue reading

Gone with the Wind [uk London]

This exhibition brings together three pioneers of sound art, Max Eastley (born 1944, UK), Takehisa Kosugi (born 1938, Japan) and Walter Marchetti (born 1931, Italy). Each artist has developed a distinct approach to the problem of representing immateriality, while sharing a lightness of touch, approaching sound with patience, restraint and fidelity. As well as presenting new and historic work, the exhibition will comprise live performance, and a selection of material from the artists’ substantial archives.

Max Eastley is an artist and musician whose sound sculptures play on a balance between the natural environment and human intervention. Continue reading

This workshop will provide an introduction to attaching mini solar panels to small battery-powered devices. Wire your own simple oscillators using solar cells, piezo discs & a few simple electronic components such as resistors & potentiometers. “For the first half of the 20th century, curator Fo Wilson reminds us, the practice of craft was heralded as a “remedy” to how human values were changed by the Industrial Age. Here the hand-made was given privileged status over the machine-made, and thus craft forms gifted new value through the artisan. In the latter part of the last century, as the world moved from apprenticeship and artisanship to a more intellectual and theoretical-based framework for valuing contemporary art, so too have craft practices and discourses been challenged.
