With Memory Loops, Munich is creating a virtual memorial for the victims of National Socialism. Michaela Melián’s audio work of art comprises 300 German and 175 English audio tracks which, from 23 September, 2010 onwards, can be called up under www.memoryloops.net and downloaded free of charge. David Rokeby, Very Nervous System (1983-) Documentary Collection — From the Introduction by Caitlin Jones and Lizzie Muller: [...] “This artwork is a particularly interesting case study for the Indeterminate Archive for two reasons. Firstly, it offers an unmatched demonstration of the importance of experience in media art. Very Nervous System is, as many audience members pointed out in our interviews with them, essentially an empty room until someone walks in and activates it. It is a work that is brought into being very literally through experience.

Secondly, it is a seminal work in the history of media art, with a lifespan of more than 28 years. Its celebrity and longevity pose some particularly interesting questions about documentation and contextualisation of media artworks over time and through change. Continue reading

The Temporary Travel Office is pleased to release the first volume in its Stories in Reserve series of guide books.

The series will feature original guided tours created by artists, activists, historians and storytellers that span from polemic narrative to experimental soundscape. Taking its title from 20th Century scholar Michel de Certeau’s The Practice of Everyday Life, the series will attempt to engage with “fragmentary and inward-turning histories, pasts that others are not allowed to read.”

The Bike Box is a mobile-media bicycle library and interactive installation housed in the Devotion Gallery. The Bike Box allows participants to check out cheap, durable, technology-enhanced bikes and a free open source iPhone application developed by David Gagnon of the Games Learning Society at UW-Madison especially for this project. As participants pedal around central Brooklyn, they are able to contribute site-specific audio through the iPhone application, as well as listen to a curated collection of geo-specific sounds provided by a variety of local land-use experts, historians, poets, artists, and other interpreters. The mission of the Media Fragments Working Group, part of the Video in the Web Activity, is to address temporal and spatial media fragments in the Web using Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI). It involves breaking up video so you can link to points in the timeline (deep hyperlinking), enabling video to be broken up into parts. See this.

The eleventh edition of ERROR ONE brings together international artists who work with video, audio, photo and light installations. These contemporary works of art are displayed in interaction with the city, on facades, windows and screens around the Leopold De Waelplaats in Antwerp, in the vicinity of the Royal Museum of Fine Art. While the term “crowd sourcing” generally refers to a large group of people (i.e. internet users) contributing to the realization of a project, it might also apply in interesting ways to the newest installation by Jody Zellen. In “The Blackest Spot,” at LA’s Fringe gallery, she culls footage of crowds and corrals them into content categories which are in turn activated by visitors to the exhibition. While the crowd is usually theorized as a single entity or herd, Zellen’s selections exemplify the many different means and reasons for which people choose to assemble in a single spot.
