In 1964 Marshal McLuhan published his essay “Media Hot and Cold,” in one of his most influential books, Understanding Media.[1] The essay considers the concepts of hot and cold as metaphors to define how people before and during the sixties related to the ongoing development of media, not only in Canada and the United States but also throughout the world.[2] Since the sixties, the terms hot and cold have become constant points of reference in media studies. However, these principles, as defined by McLuhan, have changed since he first introduced them. Artists Tara Rebele (USA), Miljana Peric (Serbia) and Suzon Fuks (Australia) invite you to contribute to and participate in a new work commissioned for the 090909 UpStage Festival, a curated cyberformance event for live online audiences and proximal audiences at RL venues around the world to take place on September 9, 2009.

The piece is a poetic, abstract, participatory performance. Part live intermedia cyberformance exquisite corpse, part virtual poetic installation, this work will explore the poetic, lyrical, polyvocal, participatory possibilities of the UpStage venue — collaging visuals, sound, text and live audience participation. The works selected in the exhibition share a process akin to what the Situationists International have referred to as détournement; a term that implies a reuse of well known media to deliver a message opposed to the original. The artworks gathered have studied a very specific form of rhetoric, one shaped and disseminated as a tool for the political and economic industries. It would per­haps be coun­ter­pro­duc­tive to de­lim­it what this ma­ter­ial may con­sist of, or what trans­for­ma­tions it may un­der­go. the ten­den­cy here will simp­ly be to let the work speak for it­self as much as it can.

The word ‘nula’ means ‘zero’ or ‘nothing’ in several languages; notably Czech, which I point out only because I am based in Prague. The esthetic impulse behind Nula emphasizes “showing” or “alluding” rather than “expressing”. Continue reading

Define Your Terms (or Kanye West Fucked Up My Show): Paul B. Davis (Beige) :: May 27 - July 4, 2009 :: Seventeen Gallery, 17 Kingsland Road, London.

Paul B. Davis’ probing, contemplative second solo show at Seventeen represents a bold step forward for the artist… though not necessarily one he expected to take. It was instigated by a semi-voluntary rejection of a practice that, until very recently, was central to his creative output and figured prominently in his debut exhibition at the gallery - Intentional Computing (2007). A curious turn of events led to this unforeseen repudiation and redefinition of practice:

“I woke up one morning in March to a flood of emails telling me to look at some video on YouTube. Seconds later saw I Kanye West strutting around in a field of digital glitches that looked exactly like my work. It fucked my show up… the very language I was using to critique pop content from the outside was now itself a mainstream cultural reference.” Continue reading

Daniel C. Howe & Bill Seaman exhibit the Architecture of Association, as part of Dans la Nuit, des Images at Grand Palais in Paris :: December 18, 2008 - January 1, 2009.

A large-scale generative installation modelling human associative processes in diverse media, the Architecture of Association (AoA) algorithmically generates and combines fragments of video, text, and sound in real-time via a cluster of networked computers and databases. While a smaller version of the AoA premiered in August at the Museum of Image and Sound in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the installation at the Grand Palais will be the first full-size installation, spanning over 150 sq feet of high-definition monitors.
