Open Air [us Philadelphia]

Association for Public Art Presents Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Open Air :: until October 14, 2012; Nightly, 8:00-11:00 pm :: Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA.

The Association for Public Art in Philadelphia (aPA, formerly the Fairmount Park Art Association) presents the world premiere of Open Air by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Open Air is a spectacular interactive light experience directed by participants’ voices and GPS locations, illuminating the night sky from Philadelphia’s historic Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Inspired by the city’s rich tradition of democracy and respect for free speech, Open Air was created specifically for Philadelphia and for participation by the general public. Continue reading

“Border Bumping” by Julian Oliver

Border Bumping is a work of dislocative media that situates cellular telecommunications infrastructure as a disruptive force, challenging the integrity of national borders.

As we traverse borders our cellular devices hop from network to network across neighbouring territories, often before or after we ourselves have arrived. These moments, of our device operating in one territory whilst our body continues in another, can be seen to produce a new and contradictory terrain for action.

Running a freely available, custom-built smartphone application, Border Bumping agents collect cell tower and location data as they traverse national borders in trains, cars, buses, boats or on foot. Moments of discrepancy at the edges are logged and uploaded to the central Border Bumping server, at the point of crossing. Continue reading

The Baltic Goes Digital [pl Gdansk]

The Baltic Goes Digital Call for Submissions - Deadline: June 15, 2012.

The Baltic Goes Digital is an open contest for artworks that utilize web-based, mobile or locative media to create a vision of an imaginary, non-existent ‘Baltic City’.

The contest is organized by the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in Gdansk and the Gdansk City Gallery as part of the international ART LINE project, which is co-financed with funds from the European Regional Development Fund operating within the South Baltic Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013.

The contest is aimed at artists and people interested in its subject-matter – i.e. graphic artists, designers, architects, programmers – from the Baltic states (Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia). Continue reading
