Carlo Bernardini, La Rivincita dell’Angolo [it Rome]

Carlo Bernardini, La Rivincita dell’Angolo :: June 24 - October 30, 2011 :: MACRO - Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Via Nizza 138 angolo Via Cagliari, Roma.

For the elevator shafts of the historic wing of the MACRO, The Contemporary Art Museum of Rome, Carlo Bernardini has created an installation, on different floors, consisting of two stainless steel sculptures, placed in the corners of the shafts; a spatial drawing is then created using optical fibres. The installation redraws the areas, literally sculpting the darkness, thus totally changing the perception and completely reconfiguring the space to create a new architecture of light. The real material used in Bernardini’s work is indeed “space”, which, shaped by the medium of light, is taken by the hand to “another” dimension: the place of thought.

Federico Díaz: outside itself [it Venice]

Federico Díaz: outside itself at the Veniice Biennale :: June 4 - September 30, 2011 :: Opening: June 4; 6:00 pm :: Nappa 90, Arsenale Novissimo, Venice.

Federico Díaz, acclaimed Prague-based artist, is creating a self-replicating, site-specific sculptural installation shaped by viewer-inspired data that gives new meaning to the term “going viral.” Imagine thousands of black spheres morphing according to changes in ambient light generated by the fluid interactivity of viewers. A mathematical program enables two robots to build, and together, arrange about 2,000 5-centimeter-diameter balls every 12 hours. Continue reading

FEAR by Marie Sester [us Troy, NY]

FEAR, by Marie Sester, is a public art work that uses a common object as a focal point of emotional interaction.

Situated in the middle of a lobby, a table is illuminated from within, surrounded by sound producing chairs; all of them “breathing” peacefully. When this calming point of attraction is approached, the soothing light gradually becomes aggressive and the chairs start howling in agony. When left alone, the objects resume their peaceful existence.

FEAR is part of a new series of works titled EMOTION. This series aims to evoke emotive states through common objects (furniture, plants, other familiar things). The overarching desire for this series is for these objects to take over a public space, blending in innocuously with the everyday. Continue reading

“Tessel” by LAb[au]

Tessel — by LAb[au] (on view November 6- December 6, 2010 @ MediaRuimte, Brussels) — is a kinetic installation investigating the perception of sound and space.

Its name is derived from ‘tessellation’, a term applied to the geometric subdivision of a surface into plane units, also known as ’tiling’. It also describes a software technique that allows calculation of renderings through the subdivision of surfaces into polygons. The term has its origin in the Latin word ‘tessella’, describing the square tiles used to make mosaics.

Tessellation has been applied throughout history from ancient to modern times, from two to n-dimensional configurations and merges science and art through mathematics. Here Tessel is based on the ‘pinwheel pattern’, a non-periodic tiling coined by mathematicians Charles Radin and John Conway, which allows the creation of an infinitely complex geometry constructed with a simple single ’seed’: a right triangle. Here, the pinwheel pattern is transformed, folded and transposed to the third dimension. Continue reading
