“Generator Everything” by Bruce Sterling

Marius Watz’ ElectroPlastique #1 - Preview 720p

Generator Everything by Bruce Sterling: “Marx said that men make their own history — but men don’t get to select the circumstances in which history is made. That’s what it’s like to be a “generative artist” — you have the productive capacity to generate incredible profusions of artistic material. Continue reading

2011 Screengrab New Media Arts Award: Nostalgia

Screengrab 2011: Nostalgia :: December 12, 2011 :: eMerge Media Space, James Cook University, School of Creative Arts, Townsville, Queensland 4811, Australia :: Call for Art — Deadline: July 22, 2011.

Nostalgia runs deep in the network. The clean lines and coded purity of interface culture and consumer electronics belies a deeper yearning for the origins of new media. 8 Bit games, glitch art, stop motion video, audio distortions and retro stylings are cropping up throughout the networked landscape as artists unpack, smudge, melt, data-mosh and retrace their steps back to the early halcyon days of digital media. Tactile, fluid, fuzzy analogue aesthetics are emerging in surprising places as the origins of our streamlined relationship with technology and the world around us is interrogated, encoded and telegraphed into our livings rooms, browsers and pockets. Live Stage: All The World’s A Screen [UK + Spain]

All The World’s A Screen — A live telematic performance by Charlotte Gould & Paul Sermon :: May 28, 2011; 4:00 - 6:00 pm (Manchester) + 5:00 - 7:00 pm (Barcelona) :: MadLab, 36-40 Edge Street, Manchester, M4 1HN + Hangar.org, Poblenou, Barcelona.

Audiences in Manchester and Barcelona will be joined together on screen for the first time to create their own interactive generative cinema experience complete with sets, costumes and props. Employing the scenographic techniques of Alfred Hitchcock the artists have created a miniature film set in which the audience can act and direct their own movie, transporting participants into animated environments and sets where they will create their own unique narrative. Federico Díaz: outside itself [it Venice]

Federico Díaz: outside itself at the Veniice Biennale :: June 4 - September 30, 2011 :: Opening: June 4; 6:00 pm :: Nappa 90, Arsenale Novissimo, Venice.

Federico Díaz, acclaimed Prague-based artist, is creating a self-replicating, site-specific sculptural installation shaped by viewer-inspired data that gives new meaning to the term “going viral.” Imagine thousands of black spheres morphing according to changes in ambient light generated by the fluid interactivity of viewers. A mathematical program enables two robots to build, and together, arrange about 2,000 5-centimeter-diameter balls every 12 hours. Continue reading

Live Stage: Scott Draves [us Brooklyn]

Scott Draves: Pioneer of Generative Art :: May 13 – June, 2011 :: Opening: May 13; 7:00 - 10:00 pm :: Devotion Gallery, 54 Maujer Street, Brooklyn, NY.

What is the relationship between man and machine? Is open source a sustainable way to run a creative society? Can digital creations have the subtlety we know in the natural world? These are the issues addressed by Scott Draves’s work; he creates art by writing software that runs an internet distributed supercomputer consisting of 450,000 computers and people, creating images as a form of artificial life, each with its own genome, generated by thousands of numbers that define how it looks and moves. The first versions of this algorithm date from 1992. Continue reading

David Galbraith: KenKen GS :: April 10 - May 12, 2011 :: Gridspace, 112 Rogers Avenue, Brooklyn, New York .

KenKen GS is a new installation work that continues David Galbraith’s exploration of a tightly-coupled yet non-linear and generative relationship between image and sound. The work’s compositional basis includes the structure and expanded numerical content of four KenKen puzzles, historical color scales that propose different mappings from musical pitch to color hue, and 15 resonant acoustic frequencies taken from various locations within Gridspace.
