Motion Capture: Drawing and the Moving Image [ie Cork]

Motion Capture: Drawing and the Moving Image :: until November 4, 2012 :: Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College, Cork, Ireland.

Motion Capture is an exhibition that explores the relationship of movement within drawing and the moving image. Featuring artworks from the mid-twentieth century through to the present day, the exhibition emphasizes the way in which artists have employed the capacities of these mediums to communicate and embody movement.

The question of how we understand drawing in our increasingly technological world is fundamental to Motion Capture. While the traditional characteristics of drawing as a tactile and intimate medium might seem at odds with the digital networks of our age, drawing re-emerges in new forms, often in response to technologies that have altered our sense of movement, time and space. Live Stage: Art that Iterates [us NYC]

Art that Iterates :: September 4-28, 2012 :: Opening: September 7; 5:00 – 8:00 pm :: Macy Art Gallery, Macy Hall 444, 525 West 120th Street, New York City.

Art that Iterates explores change as a condition of the artist’s way of knowing, making, and doing. Everywhere, it seems, change is the only cultural constant. For artists, material playfulness bounces across the threshold that separates technology from craft, pictures from sculptures, and toys from jokes from poetry. Art that Iterates celebrates this remix condition with works that smear the boundaries between art/ non-art, mediate/ immediate, and viewer/ participant. Continue reading

“I think of art, at its most significant, as a DEW line, a Distant Early Warning system that can always be relied on to tell the old culture what is beginning to happen to it.” –Marshall McLuhan

Bunrakuraku [jp Osaka]

Bunrakuraku :: Galaxy Gallery, 大阪市北区中央区千日前2-3-9 ユニバースビル1F, Osaka, 542-0074, Japan.

Bunrakuraku is a new interactive project from SaBa, exploring the intersection of technology, participation, and puppetry. Taking inspiration from international styles of puppet theater, ranging from Japanese Bunraku to Punch and Judy, this work explores the intersection of audience and puppeteer ― with a few extra limbs included. Bunrakuraku connects audiences from separate locations into a virtual, puppet theater space. Limbs appear and disappear, each controlled by a different audience member. In this space, an individual’s movements and actions are combined to form a single multi-limbed puppet. Here, people are encouraged to playfully engage with an unseen collaborator. Continue reading
