Net Works: Case Studies in Web Art and Design (Routledge) offers an inside look into the process of successfully developing thoughtful, innovative digital media. In many practice-based art texts and classrooms, technology is divorced from the socio-political concerns of those using it. Although there are many resources for media theorists, practice-based students sometimes find it difficult to engage with a text that fails to relate theoretical concerns to the act of creating. Net Works strives to fill that gap. Continue reading

Live Stage: Chris Cuellar [us Chicago]

Upgrade! Chicago: Chris Cuellar :: October 4, 2011; 7:00 pm :: The Nightingale 1084 N. Milwaukee, Chicago, IL.

Chris Cuellar will be presenting on a series he recently organized for the Art21 blog where he transformed the guest column into a practical art-making resource as well as a vehicle for the un-distribution of existing works. He asked a small group of artists to give away their secrets in the form of online tutorials. Each how-to is meant to give the reader enough information to accurately reproduce the project presented. Furthermore, in order to reduce issues of artistic ownership, each artist’s contribution has been more or less ‘anonymized’ before posting, with as many overt references to the the individual artist or original project removed as possible. Live Stage: The Era of Objects [nl Rotterdam + online]

We are rapidly entering (and perhaps even have already entered) an era where we are able to print 3D objects at our desks, make and share laser-cut gifts for friends, and use off-the-shelf tools to plug these creations into the web and have them send status updates on our behalf. We have some commonly-held visions of the future, but what could our very wildest dreams (and nightmares) look like, beyond the cliché of the flying car? What answers can we find in speculative design? Our expert guests will explore these questions in collaboration with the audience in a hands-on, “open think-tank” format. Continue reading

SALT presents Becoming Istanbul, 90 and The Making Of Beyoğlu :: September 13 - December 31, 2011.

SALT Beyoğlu’s second comprehensive exhibition Becoming Istanbul will be accompanied by parallel programs 90 and The Making Of Beyoğlu. Turkey’s aim to find itself a valid place within the global networks of politics, economy, commerce, culture and tourism has become the burden of İstanbul. The city is promoted to new users, both locally and internationally, with imagery far removed from its actual overall state and infrastructure. SALT Beyoğlu will host three projects that examine İstanbul from different vantage points, attempting to offer a more multifaceted understanding of the city. Continue reading

Live Stage: Content | Form | Im-material [at Vienna]

Why is it still easier to get an entire museum collection on the Internet than to get a single work of Internet-based Art in a museum space? As with the nature of this question, both aspects have to be taken into account: the field of Internet-based Art with its characteristics and proponents, as well as the mechanisms that allow institutions to filter what the public at large understands to be art.
