Time/Bank will open a New York City branch in the form of a temporary restaurant on the Lower East Side, which will offer daily lunch in exchange for time credits and time currency that you can earn by helping others in Time/Bank community.

There will be a changing menu of meals prepared with recipes provided by a group of artists who like to cook, including Martha Rosler, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Carolina Caycedo, Lawrence Weiner, Liam Gillick, WAGE, and many others. Continue reading

Culture Lab Newcastle is hosting an international interdisciplinary event open to the general public, on the topic of Connected Communities. This symposium will include talks and projects from theorists and practitioners alike, selected from a call for expressions of interest.

Many theorists have regarded communities as networks of interacting people within a defined territory, and policy-makers have tended to respond to this particular understanding. However, in an era where digital technologies have supported transnational forms of connectedness and the efficiency of grassroot movements, communities are once again looked at as innovative fertile grounds for alternative social organisation. [Bins & Benches by Greyworld] The Australian National University School of Art presents Public Interactions: Dialogues on Art and Public Space, an international symposium to be held in Canberra from the July 20 - 23, 2011.

International and local artists, architects, designers and public intellectuals will converge to explore the role of art in the public spaces of the contemporary community. Diverse practices will be revealed across digital, relational, guerrilla, ephemeral, heritage, commemorative and architectural spaces. Trespass: First a Parade, Then a Party :: October 2, 2011; 11:00 am :: 1933 South Broadway, Los Angeles, CA.

The streets of downtown Los Angeles will erupt in a parade of local artists and residents, complete with music, dancing and performance. The parade is the culmination of Trespass, a collaborative project between Arto Lindsay, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and West of Rome Public Art (WoR). They have commissioned 40 Los Angeles based artists, including John Baldessari, Barbara Kruger, Nancy Rubins and Sterling Ruby, to produce a statement — their call to action, pleasure and reciprocity. The statements have been printed on T-shirts in English and in Spanish, and will be worn as part of the parade and sold via the West of Rome website. Continue reading

A group of activists, educators, technologists, and community organizers now known as Public Laboratory came together to organize the Gulf Oil Mapping project. Since May 2010, we have been working with New Orleans-based Louisiana Bucket Brigade to get Gulf Coast residents out on boats and along beaches to produce high-resolution aerial imagery of the spill’s effects. All the imagery from this project is being released into the public domain.

Grassroots Mapping is part of the Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science, founded by a group of activists, educators, technologists, and community organizers interested in new ways to promote action, intervention, and awareness through a participatory research model. Continue reading

The Commons by Linda Carroli:

Taking cues from the examples and critics cited here, the idea of the commons has emerged as a networked space of creative and generative possibility and risk. To recover is to reclaim. In shaping the commons, Jay Walljasper states that we “recognise some forms of wealth belong to all of us, and that these community resources must be actively protected and managed for the good of all. The commons are the things that we inherit and create jointly, and that will (hopefully) last for generations to come. The commons consists of gifts of nature such as air, oceans and wildlife as well as shared social creations such as libraries, public spaces, scientific research and creative works.” However, there’s never just one commons – the commons itself is multiple and complex, in process and becoming. Artists actively keep the commons alive in the face of all kinds of opposition, censorship and antagonism. Continue reading
