Exquisite Zone @ GLOW 2011 Festival [nl Eindhoven]

Exquisite Zone by Carmin Karasic & Rolf van Gelder @ GLOW 2011 Festival :: November 5 - 12, 2011 :: Kennedyplein, Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

The title, Exquisite Zone, references the 1920-30s surrealist drawing game called ‘Exquisite Corpse’, in which each collaborator adds to a collective composition.

Exquisite Zone invites nightly participants to use their smart phones to make digital marks in public space. “The idea is simple, but we’ve never seen it done real time with mobile devices, such as phones.” [See Cell Tagging by Brooke Knight] Many people can add to the ‘collaborative public drawing’. Riverscaping/Alles Am Fluss [us Massachusetts]

Riverscaping/Alles Am Fluss is an international and northeastern US public realm public art/design-build competition on the Connecticut River in Massachusetts :: Deadline: December 10, 2011.

The objective of this competition is to uncover new public realm art, architectural and environmental approaches to riverscapes at two scales: regional and intimate. The Rise of Performance Architecture [be Brussels]

The Rise of Performance Architecture: Camp-Conference on Art/Urban Strategies :: September 22 - October 1, 2011 :: Grisar Park, Brussels, Todays Art Festival.

Accepting architecture as cultural production, its performative dimension must also contribute to a critical role, that is, to architecture’s capacity to produce commentary regarding the ongoing transformations of culture and society. In this sense, the notion of architectural performance implied here feeds directly upon the tradition of performance art.” — Pedro Gadanho, “Architecture as performance”, revista Dédalo N°2, Porto, 2007 Continue reading

Skylar Tibbits: Can We Make Things that Make Themselves?

Coded Cultures 2011: The City as Interface [at Vienna]

Coded Cultures 2011: The City as Interface :: September 21 - October 2, 2011 :: Second district (Leopoldstadt), Vienna, Austria.

Coded Cultures is an multinational initiative of the group 5uper.net to discuss and reflect the intersections of media, art, society and technology in experimental settings of exihibitions, workshops, symposia, presentations and artistic interventions. For the fourth time, Coded Cultures presents a forum to discuss and present (new) media arts, digital communities and positions itself in the current international (media arts) discourse.

Cultural accomplishments of individuals or differently organized forms of human beings in context with an ever-changing (transforming) environment bring manifold products and processes to surface: cultural artifacts, »distributed agencies«, »framed interactivity« , collective ideas. “Freestanding” by Petko Dourmana [ee Tallinn]

Freestanding by Petko Dourmana :: Commission for gateways. Art and Networked Culture, 2011:

Presenting two towers in augmented reality on smart phones and telling their stories with drawings and video, Freestanding invites audiences to compare the concepts and contexts in which the structures were conceived. One of the towers was never built, but managed to become one of the most recognizable examples of the constructivist movement and is considered one of the symbols of modernity in the early twentieth century — Vladimir Tatlin’s project for the four hundred meter high Monument to the Third International (1919–20). Live Stage: Symptoms [uk Newcastle]

Symptoms — an exploratory workshop and tour lead by Martin Howse :: Part of Invisible Architectures :: September 9-11, 2011; 12:00 - 5:00 pm daily :: Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

“And this is the reason why it is impossible in a visitation to prevent the spreading of the plague by the utmost human vigilance: viz., that it is impossible to know the infected people from the sound, or that the infected people should perfectly know themselves.” — Daniel DeFoe. Journal of the Plague Year.

With the city of Newcastle identified as a layered site of contagion and execution, a leaky processor Symptoms proposes a revealing of materiality and message, of self-evident signal and carrier within the landscape of the plague city. Continue reading
