Since the women’s liberation movement, various gains and losses have occurred in regards to the representation of women in art.[1] In its infancy, women artists co-opted video as a mass medium for channeling affective and durational realities. Eventually, the migration of video to immaterial digital format and the decentralized distribution of the internet has had implications for its curation and appreciation. Hotspot Interventions

In-site Montreal: Curator’s statement by Michelle Kasprzak :: In-Site Montreal is a collection of site-specific art presented on the portal pages of five wireless internet (Wi-Fi) hotspots in Montreal. Artists Nicolas Fleming, Maria Legault, and Virginie Laganiere have created artworks that may be viewed when users of the free service provided by Ile Sans Fil log in to their accounts at the selected hotspots.

The five hotspots are rooted in specific spaces, each one with its own unique properties. The In-Site Montreal project grew out of a desire to augment the experience of place for Wi-Fi users, offering an additional layer of information within the hotspot environments. The artworks that are presented on the portal pages are inventive responses to the characteristics of the spaces that the hotspots inhabit. Continue reading

Weather Controlled Video

The Unseen Video is a weather controlled music video for Mike Milosh’s You Make Me Feel. The video is affected by the weather and local time of the viewer’s localisation. Every little change in their environment ensures that they will never see the same video twice. The look of the video might slightly change within an hour, but will have a whole new character in a few months. More screenshots.

Cloudscapes

The Cloud Harp is a meteo-electronic installation that converts real-time, thanks to an infra-red laser beam and a telescope sharing the same optics, the height, density and structure of clouds into sounds and musical sequences. The melodies and sounds are determined by factors such as cloud height, density, structure, luminosity, and meteorological conditions. Each cloudscape produces a particular kind of sequence. The Harp is polyphonic : it can sing on many different voices simultaneously, each one being mapped on a specific altitude range. It sings 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by any weather. When the sky is blue, it remains silent. The range of the instrument is 25 000 feet or 8 kilometers, which means that some high stratospheric clouds, such as cirruses, are not detected.
