Transparency Grenade

The lack of Corporate and Governmental transparency has been a topic of much controversy in recent years, yet our only tool for encouraging greater openness is the slow, tedious process of policy reform.

Presented in the form of a Soviet F1 Hand Grenade, the Transparency Grenade is an iconic cure for these frustrations, making the process of leaking information from closed meetings as easy as pulling a pin.

Equipped with a tiny computer, microphone and powerful wireless antenna, the Transparency Grenade captures network traffic and audio at the site and securely and anonymously streams it to a dedicated server where it is mined for information. Continue reading

Kristoffer Gansing Censors Augmented Reality Artist

(Updated here) On netbehaviour, Tamiko Thiel wrote: “Today at the Transmediale in Berlin, Germany’s most important media art festival, Transmediale director Kristoffer Gansing censored augmented reality artist Tamiko Thiel in a discussion billed as an “open conversation.”

During the panel discussion “25 years of transmediale / reSource Activism VIDEOMAKERS UNITE!,” Thiel was invited by a panelist to talk about Reign of Gold, her augmented reality artwork for the AR Occupy Wall Street project.

Gansing — who was not moderating but sat in the audience — literally shut her up, and demanded that her website be taken off the screen, saying he finds augmented reality art “offensive!” Continue reading

Join The Craigslist Revolution!

Join The Craigslist Revolution! Bashar Al-Assad Is Looking For A Job! Joseph Delappe has posted an ad on the Reno Craigslist. It reads:

“I am Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria and Regional Secretary of the Ba’ath Party. The circumstances of my current employment may soon be coming to an end, therefore I am looking for a new job! I will consider all offers of temporary and/or long-term employment. I am especially interested in working abroad. Hacking Science and Technology Studies [dk Copenhagen]

[Tokyo Hacker Space’s meeting place. Photo Credit: David Powell] 4S/EASST Panel: Hacking Science and Technology Studies (STS) – bio-hacking, open hardware development, and hackerspaces :: October 17-20, 2012 :: Copenhagen, Denmark :: Call for Papers – Deadline: March 18.

During the past two decades, hacking has chiefly been associated with software and computers. This is now changing as the figure of the hacker, together with the ideas and practices associated with this figure, are spreading to new walks of life. Thus we are reminded of the origin of hacking in hardware development. Continue reading

David Weinberger on Too Big To Know

David Weinberger on Too Big To Know:

We used to know how to know. Get some experts, maybe a methodology, add some criteria and credentials, publish the results, and you get knowledge we can all rely on. But as knowledge is absorbed by our new digital medium, it’s becoming clear that the fundamentals of knowledge are not properties of knowledge but of its old paper medium. Skulls don’t scale. But the Net does. Now networked knowledge is taking on the properties of its new medium: never being settled, including disagreement within itself, and becoming not a set of stopping points but a web of temptations. Networked knowledge, for all its strengths, has its own set of problems. But, in knowledge’s new nature there is perhaps a hint about why the Net has such surprising transformative power. Continue reading

[nettime] Vincent Gallo versus Jillian Macdonald

Posted by Andres Manniste on nettime: Vincent Gallo versus Jillian Macdonald:

Artist Jillian Mcdonald has run into trouble with Vincent Gallo, who is represented at the Whitney Biennial this year. It is about her 2004 work, “To Vincent, With Love.”

Incidentally, the Whitney actually has a version of this work in their Artport. I find this all very confusing.

She writes, “I just received a cease and desist letter from Vincent Gallo’s attorney suggesting I added no creative material in making my video (which took me 8 months to make in 2004), To Vincent with Love. Also this letter claims I am causing him personal injury. It also demands I keep the letter confidential, and that we reach a settlement to be paid to Mr Gallo.” Continue reading
