EPLURIBUSUNUM © (Out of many, one ©), initiated in Lyon in September, 2005. This work is composed of a patent, audio recordings, digital images, flags, documents and feeds itself with relationships it generates. Thierry Boutonnier filed a patent application for the United States of America’s flag with an extra star. This idea, formalized and registered at the INPI (Institut National de la Propriété Intellectuelle) on September 14, 2005, occurs in a geopolitical context where the concept of preventive war continues to claim lives. This patent is preventive, it anticipates the “one more State” by an appropriation of its representation on the “Stars and Stripes”. Depending on the installation of this documentation, the viewer deconstructs powers which federate while individualizing (INPI, finance, United States of America). EPLURIBUSUNUM © was included in Flagpole.

Thierry Boutonnier: TB-R&D, open platform for collaborative work, researches and sets up projects around the broad question of domestication. TB is the monogram of Thierry Boutonnier or tuberculosis.

Cécile Azoulay — artist, and curator Flagpole and member of Plateforme — will discuss Flagpole. Plateforme is dedicated to contemporary art diffusion, creation and resource, and works as a unifying and shared space, a place of exchanges between artists, curators and audiences. Plateforme is run by the parisian structure L’entreprise bringing together around fifty international artists.
