Bijlmer Euro - Parasitic Currency for the ‘Dutch Bronx’ by Christian Nold :: July 8-10, 2010; 2:00 - 11:00 pm :: Market, Amsterdamse Poort, Bijlmer, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
From June until the end of September 2010 you can get a unique discount at seventeen shops in Amsterdam Zuidoost just by paying with Bijlmer Euros. The Bijlmer Euro is a regular five or ten Euro note with a re-usable and removable sticker containing an RFID-tag (comparable to the chip in a disposable travel card). By scanning this chip every time the note is used to buy something, the flow of money in the local area will be made visible in a publicly accessible way. The participating shops have been chosen because they give a strong representation of the Bijlmer economic network, often offering unique goods and forming social hubs where different local communities meet.
The Bijlmer Euro is a complimentary local currency for South East of Amsterdam which creates economic benefits for local people, inspires social connections and builds a complex network identity for the Bijlmer.
The Bijlmer Euro is a social art project created by British artist Christian Nold and commissioned by Imagine IC in co-operation with De Waag Society. The Bijlmer Euro will be introduced on July 8th in the Amsterdamse Poort, on July 9th at the market at Kraaiennest and on July 10th at Ganzenhoef.
Come and get a Bijlmer Euro or make your own! We will be hosting money making workshops soon.
