Mixed Reality and Performance

The International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media (IJPADM) is seeking contributions to a special issue specifically relating to Mixed Reality and Performance :: Issue Editor: Alan Chamberlain (Mixed Reality Lab – University of Nottingham).

Mixed Reality performances have highlighted our ability to: exist, understand and concurrently engage with both virtual and real worlds in a performative way. The development of the technologies under-pinning such Mixed Reality systems have afforded performers, directors and developers the chance to create experiences that can both spatially and temporally explore the boundaries of performance and understand where and why performance occurs in everyday life. New Imaging: Transdisciplinary Srategies for Art Beyond the New Media [au Sydney]

New Imaging: Transdisciplinary Srategies for Art Beyond the New Media :: November 5-6, 2010 :: Artspace, 43/51 Cowper Wharf Rd, Sydney, Australia :: Call for Abstracts – Deadline: June 25, 2010.

A profound shift is occurring in our understanding of postmodern media culture. Since the turn of the millennium the emphasis on mediation as technology and as aesthetic idiom, as opportunity for creative initiatives and for critique, has become increasingly normative and doctrinaire. Mediation and the new media arts have in fact become the new medium of critical and pedagogical discourse: like water is for fish, like culture is for cultural studies, mediation is a concept that is taken for granted now because it is itself the medium in which we think and act, in which we swim. Marco Deseriis is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU and a free-lance journalist. In 2003, along with co-author Giuseppe Marano, he wrote Net.Art: L’arte della Connessione (Milan: Shake), a book which explores net.art both as an internet-based art and an art of networking. This one-night exhibition presents three newly commissioned experimental sound compositions by artists from across the country. The two-hour exhibition, occurring two days before the closing of P.P.O.W’s concurrent three artist show Debris, seeks to invert the ways that the viewer traditionally perceives an exhibition through positing sonic manipulations of its visual, written, and social material. The three new works will be presented to viewers in the darkened gallery-turned-theater, synthesized under the dislocating darkness — an additional empirical inversion and mediator between the visual gallery experience and the reconfiguration this experience through sound. Conveyors: Towards Uncertain Address [se Helsingborg]

Conveyors (HBG): Towards Uncertain Address by Anders Weberg and Robert Willim :: Knutpunkten, Helsingborg, Sweden.

“In this space of flows the conveyors are brought to work … Download them to a mobile media player when you are there and find the spots where the material was recorded. The perceptions of your specific time spent at Knutpunkten will blend with the mediated sound and images from screen and headphones.”

A traffic hub is intended to provide predictable movement and transport. But you never quite know which motions and emotions will occur. So, how to depict or make sense of these kind of sites? In this case the traffic hub is Knutpunkten. How could experiences of everyday flow that merge with the unpredictable be illustrated here? Continue reading
