VIRTUAL WORLDS, SOCIAL NETWORKS AND AUGMENTED REALITY: The topic of this conference is virtual worlds and augmented reality. More precisely, we will try to understand how we have gradually arrived at this generalise hypertrophy. Today is not enough to live a single life and we create another, virtual identity. In the same way, urban landscapes are multiplied through augmented reality, which adds an increasing number of scenarios to those perceived by our eyes. Art works too are to be ‘read’ taking into account the stratification of comments and meaning they are made of, while the post-kitsch trend, with a large number of allusions, is growing in strength.

The same happens with communication, that becomes richer and more complex and changes its meaning depending on its different levels and on the media employed.

On the whole, we have more freedom of choice: we have different options and we are often asked to create the context ourselves, as if we had to choose the ingredients of a pizza. Similarly, we will be able to modify those places that are in themselves unique. Places such as the Milan Cathedral or the Pompidou Centre will change according to the personal tastes of each of us, and the person standing beside us will not see them in the same way we do. Therefore, the possibility to choose and modify will slowly expand to everything around us, thus deeply changing our perception of it.

This implies two fundamental elements: the possibility to perceive differently what we see (since it has a different colour, texture or sound for us) and the resulting broadening of the possible options, whose aim will also be to allow an exponential multiplication of the artistic version of objects and artefacts: beside the photos of the Chrysler Building there will also be photos of a red, blue, green, rough or smooth surfaced Chrysler Building.

At the same time, there is clearly an important work on communication, that on the one hand tries to track down the thousands of variations on the topic of augmented reality and on the other it generates them itself. More >>
